Hey guys, I've been checking around for a few motors and was wondering what you guys thought of a 350 like this?

do you think it makes the 275-300 hp?
was there a 4 bolt 350 in 70?

If it is a 1970 block, it looks like the L65. The only other 350 had 300hp from the start. And with his 'add ons' it should make more than base hp

steve why don't you just rebuild the one you have?

I thought you were looking for big blocks? did gas mileage change your mind?

I'm still looking at motors, my search was mostly for big blocks, but I have opened that up to small blocks as well, and yes, mostly a gas mileage thing.

My motor is starting to get real tired and give me some problems, they wouldnt be TOO bad to fix, but with the number of things popping up, and my luck I'm thinking that if I stay with my motor I basically will be rebuilding the whole thing. Which is why I'm looking to see what is out there as a replacement.

I would like to buy one already built, from what I can tell it is usually less expensive to buy one already done than buy all the pieces and build it myself. I dont have any experience (other than intake manifold/carb swap) with building motors and so I would like to have most of it built by someone else anyways.

Preferrably I would like to find a nice carbuerated small block 350, 355, or 383 that is built and basically ready to go.

Go 383. You have the same(similar now) set up as me, and if i absolutely cannot find a BBC, i'll have to go all out with a 383.

Whatever I get I want it to be a pretty decent performer on the street- if i can find a nice mild big block for a good price I will do it, but chnaces are I will stay with a small block because it is a daily driver.
I definitely want a carb motor and not FI, dont have to change gas tanks or run return line or anything, I want to just drop the motor in and go.

I have seen some decent 383's for sale in past months, seems like a good compromise between performance and gas mileage and will be capable of 300+ hp.

Hopefully- I can find a healthly small block (350-383 c.i.) making around 300-350, set up for a carb and not efi, if i can, i'll be happy :D

Steve,
I am going with a vortecpro 475. I priced all the rebuilding from all the locals and would end up paying more for a 383 then the 475. Of course there are other things you have to but so figure about 1k more for the swap. In total US about $6k and its a rebuilt engine, so I should get many miles from it.

Just thought I would point it out and I am hoping to get the engine installed soon :D

Do you have a performance goal in mind? what are you willing to change in the car to get performance (i.e. gears, convertor, etc?). I'm guessing you wont be happy with that 350 thats advertised, although i'm an SBC fan, I'd think you'd be better off starting with a 454 running that has 781 heads, and perhaps doing a cam upgrade... it will get your car moving quicker unless you want to put in steeper gears and more stall which will reduce drivebility... again goes back to your goals? i.e. run 14second 1/4 and drive everyday? or 13s, 12s, 11s?? Eg. i sold a low mileage 350 with brodix heads, crower solid cam, all forged bottom end, etc. for $3500 with a 4000 stall convertor... the combo ran 12.40s in my car...

eg: 454 GREAT RUNNING ENGINE, OUT OF 70 CHEVELLE, DROPPING NEW CRATE 502 IN SO NO ROOM FOR THIS BEAST, TAKE IT AWAY WITH CARB ALSO
NON PUFFER, LUMPY SOUND, MADE A GREAT RUNNER OUT OF THE CAR
CALL GARY 647.968.9054 (CELL) OR 705.484.0111

this guy might even have headers etc. that he'd sell you... might even be a forum member...

one more if you want to spend a little more and make more power!!

hmmm that 454 would do it :D

What i'm looking for is a low 14 second capability in my 1970 el camino. But still be driveable for everyday use.

The car will have 3.08 gears really soon, and has a stock TH350 tranny. I want to keep the rear end and tranny, and just change the motor, hopefulyl with something that will drop in nicely and be able to run low-mid 14's.

EDIT: What would you guys expect to pay for a decent 300-350 horsepower small block- fully or mostly assembled?

do you think that would be a little wild for a daily driver?

I would question the condition of it all for that price. But if he throws in the truck at least you can see/hear it run!

Wild, no. Fun, yes! small and peppy. Put on a nice exhaust, and smoke your mustang and truck pals:thumbsup:
Your gonna have OD with that combo. You could always get smaller gears if you want something more mild, but for myself personally, 3:73 is the lowest I would ever go.

Also, just because he says it has 400hp, doesn't mean squat. Guys can always ballpark their engines to boost their ego;)

yeah if I can hear it run that will make a big difference on what I'm willing to pay. With the 700R4 I would need a new driveshaft though wouldnt I?

Even if its only like 350 hp, that could work out to a low 14/ high 14 second car, which would easily remove any doubt about whether my buddys V6 mustang or Dodge Pace truck will win :D

I think the 700R4 is the same length as a th350, but I am probably wrong.

Also if you went with those 3.73's I think the car could be in the 13s for sure (depending on what tires your running)

The 383 with the 700r4 is your best bet, all that stuff for four grand? That's a hell of a deal.

But-- 8K miles on the stroker? What kind of miles and who built it? I love to drive what I've built, but I would never really trust an engine builder like me to buy a motor if I didn't know me--:p

wow, i'd take the 454 short block thats fresh for $2500, add a set of rebuilt 781 heads or bolt on alum. and you're into the 12's! over that 383, there's not enough detail on the build...what heads, cam etc, etc, the parts can vary so much in cost... you will need to shorten the driveshaft for the 700r4... and it didnt state what was done to the tranny... you should be able to pick up a used 350hp/350 style motor for $1500 carb to pan...

you want to hear a motor run... i bought a rebuilt 402 for $1400, and it came with $1000 in summit receipts, cheapie rebuild, with KB pistons, summit cam, roller rockers, arp bolts and stud kit, vic jr, etc.etc... and its been 2 years and runs strong! i asked him to leave it in the car, we fired it up, a quick ride and then i helped him yank it out the same morning and off i went...

Did you read this ebay add, seems like the guy is pretty knowledgeable about Big Block parts. He has listed a few parts to stay away from, maybe there should be a new thread started that would list parts that aren't very reliable.

steve_sutherland
Aug 23rd, 09, 6:24 PM
yeah for sure, its good to see someone who has actually dealt with the parts and knows what works and what doesnt, not just someone behind apart store counter that only knows what the computer screen tells them.

I emailed the guy with that 383 and no response, and another guy with a 454- the add was really vague and so i wanted to talk to him... ha ha now I know why the add was so non descriptive, this guy has NO idea what the motor is... it could be a 440 dodge motor and he wouldnt know... so i guess i'm not buying that one for sure ;) lol
