Hello everybody.
I have a 1968 El Camino SS 396. The complete wiring is new (selfmade), everything works great, except for the wiper. It does work not.
I even do not know, if the the wiper motor is defect. I bought a new wiper switch and I hope, you can tell me, in which way the switch and the wiper motor is to be connected.
I have a wiring diagramm, but it does not help, because the original plugs are missing, so there a innumerable possibilities to connect the three wires from the switch to the seven (!) sockets at the wiper motor...:(
Can anybody tell me, how it has to work? And how can I test the wiper motor, for I assume, that it is defect.
Maybe somebody can make a picture of the wiring and explain it to me.
Thanx a lot!!!!

Nobody? :(

It would help, when somebody could take a look under his hood and tell me the colours of the wires and their mounting positions at the wiper motor. Perhaps plus photo...?
Please!
I want my car to get ready for the 50th anniversary El Camino meeting in the Netherlands on Sep. 18-20th.
HELP!!! :pout:

Don't have a 68. Heres a pic of a 67. Your terminals in the same place?

Hello Dean!
Unfortunately my wiper motor does not work. I took a look at the wiring diagram. The colours are identical, except for the black/yellow wire. In my wiring diagram there is a yellow wire, coming direct from the fuse panel.
After a while of testing and still no function I ask myself, where does the wiper motor become ground???
And a second question: what is shown on the lower picture, that you have made?? I canīt refer it to my wipermotor...
After mounting the wipers I recognized, that they are not in the "end-position". The wiperblades are about 2" from this position on the windscreen. Could that be a reason, that the wipermotor does not work?

I am so confused

The wiper/washer system is switch grounded, meaning the switches are on the ground side. The wiper/washer motor always has 12v anytime the key is on, (yellow wires) when the wiper switch is turned on one or more of the wires are grounded (thru the wiper switch) to make it work. The ltblue and black are both grounded for low speed the ltblue only for high speed. The dkblue grounds to latch the washer pump for one cycle.

Make sure yellow, or black/yellow has power, make sure wiper/washer motor housing is well grounded to firewall, make sure wiper switch is grounded (a black wire not shown in deans pic) from wiper switch mounting holes to a good bare metal ground.

And a second question: what is shown on the lower picture, that you have made?? I canīt refer it to my wipermotor...
That is the wiper switch (viewing from the back)

Hi Greg!
Thank you for your well formulated instructions.
Now I understand, how it has to work.
Although my wiper switch looks different, I hope, that I will get the thing running. At first I will check ground connection of the motor and the switch. My wires a complete new, there shall be no problem.
I will report a.s.a.p. when I got the damned thing working...

My 65 Malibu SS, after restoration, My wipers, my horn, and now my rigth rear brake lamp is inop. But as for the wiper motor, checked all wiring, seemed to be in place, checked wiper switch, working, still no wipers, like you short of pulling my hair out. what little I have. I started jumping 12 volt hot wires with a lead from battery, also touching grounds with a wire to a good ground, then went in turned wiper switch on, it worked. The only thing I could think of was some how polarity was reversed ??????:confused:

Working on the old 65 Malibu SS more everyday, Horn problem I discovered when fixing the right rear brake lamp was inop, while replacing turn signal switch, I found when removing horn plate that the button was stuck, cleaned button and put graphite to lubericate button worked smooth, horn blows now. Wipers inop again, removed wiper switch from dash touched a ground wire to the body of wiper switch, wipers came on,
went to parts store found wire ring to go over switch for a good ground connection, ran wire to good ground. ("You NEVER HAVE ENOUGH GOOD GROUNDS") , wipers work great.
I hope this helps others fix there problems.

I checked all groundings today. They are perfect.
The damned thing still doesnīt work.
I think it is defect. The problem is, here in germany I canīt get another wiper motor...:(
Anybody out there, who wantīs to sell one to me?
I can manage the transport to germany. A friend of mine has an adress in the USA.
Offers are welcome!

Often the Bottom Bearing Freezes on these Wiper Motors. You can take it apart and lift the Rotor Shaft Up without disturbing the Brushes. Use Hi-Pressure air, Contact Cleaner and Drip Light Machine Oil into the lower Bearing.

It is verily easy to Bench Test the wiper motor out of the car with a 12 Volt source. Ensure the Ground Strap for the Motor casing is Good.

I have extras if it is the one that parks the wipers down below.

I'll send you one for the cost of shipping if you need one.

Oh!
I thought that this is not an option. My wipers are parked underneath the hood.
Are there different wiper motors?

I think there were two different motors in 68.

The motors that I have are the ones that park under the hood.
