I have not seen the stock 1967 2 door frame and an elcy side by side so I was wondering why does the rear section of the chevelle frame have to be attached to the elcy frame? Is it because of the gas tank location or body mount placement? I plan on using a fuel cell so a stock mounting location is not important. Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, the El Camino frame is longer. I don't think you need to use the rear part of the frame off the coupe, just need to cut some off the Elky frame. I think...

When I converted mine to an Elky Frame I just measured back from the mount behind the rear tire a couple of inches on both frames and cut them both off, welded the Malibu piece right where I cut the Elky off. I did this back in 1986 and thought it was a 4" difference in frame length ( 64 Malibu & 65 Elky frames. )
