my s-i-l is home from iraq, so i promised to take him riding saturday and pomona on sunday (his perfect weekend) well we headed down to pomona, got there early, the swap meet was hoppin, i mean, in all the years i've been going down there, i've never seen so many people. it was quite impressive.
then we went to see the cars. i can't remember the last time i've seen so much over priced crap. yes, there were a few nice cars that warranted the big $, and even saw a cool biscayne that was actually the buy of the show (even though it hadn't sold by the time we left).
i thought i found a camaro (91 rs), it was fairly clean, needed a heater core, the tires were new, but very cheap, and the kid had barely owned it for a month and was flipping it.
now, i have nothing against flippers, making a buck is cool.
here is where the problem started, he was a young kid, assumed i didn't know cars, and was hard selling. his sign said "motivated seller" "make offer" "need to sell today", everything that would lead you to start dealing with the guy. i make an offer...he tells me he has already turned that down, i ask what he needs? he goes into a very loud and aggresive sales pitch, about driving it to new york and doubling his $, and other crazy statements. i finally have to yell at him, "HEY! BILLY MAYS, DIAL IT BACK A NOTCH, I'M TRYING TO WORK A DEAL!". everybody laughs, which i know has blown the deal, he tells me an australian guy is going to give him full price, and he recently sold one just like it for 20k, then tells me to come back when i have more $. i had more $ on me, but at that point, i wasn't going to give it to him. so his lack of respect, and my stuborness killed the deal.
didn't bring anything home, which might be good, i have a line on a 93 z28 6 speed. but back to the point (sorry about the babbling), pomona sure doesn't seem the same, just car after car, row after row of overpriced garbage. everything looked to be blocked by steavie wonder, and painted by joe cocker. i don't think anybody knows how to wet sand these days, or how to replace leaky gaskets. i'd say 80-85% of the cars there, were stuff dragged out of somebodies yard, and slapped with a for sale sign. i do wish i'd have had a few more $ on me, there was a 64 chevelle wagon that was priced fairly, even if it had a funky flame paint job, but it was about 1,500 out of my budget.
i think what happens is, a nice ss pulls in, and has say maybe a 38k price on it, so the rest of the guys figure, hey i have a v8, mines a two door, heck! it's a chevy, i should be able to get 75% of that price.....doesn't matter that the ride is running on 3 of those 8 cylinders, or leans from the weight of the bondo in the rear quarter, or has rust holes you could put your fist threw. i have to tell you, it was a fairly big dissapointment.
my s-i-l loved riding, he had a great time at pomona, i got to spend some quality time with the grandson, so i guess the weekend wasn't a total loss....
