I recently sprayed a front clip and I had issues with the my gun (Devilbiss Plus) not spraying evenly. As in it would spray great for about the first 2 seconds across a panel then start cutting out like it was either running out of material or air. I know it wasn't the lid being clogged because the problem was still evident with the lid off. I was using a 3/8 hose and a 50 gallon shop compressor. The only thing I can think that would cause this would be a little 2 inch section of 1/4 inch pipe that is used to connect the regulator to where I hook my air hose in. Any suggestions are appreciated because I am somewhat baffled.

On a sidenote, I need to wetsand all of this orangepeeled junk off it is a black color with no metallic should I just wetsand with 600 and respray?

I'll say it anyway. Take it apart and clean the hell out of it. If it has a built in pressure control, temp. eliminate your hose reg.

You are talking about a flow coat. It will come out nice that way. I do it on bikes all the time because I have to. Put on 2-3 full wet coats after 600 or 800. People who seldom shoot get "fear" orange peel. Spray the first coat like it's your last and all the successive coats will follow. Gun close, a tad higher pressure, move fast and open that fan up but not max. And get the fluid adjusted right. And this is with a 1.4 Iwata LPH400. High solids or not makes a difference also. A good gun makes all the diff. All this means squat till you do it I know.

Set the gun up, then pull off the regulator and see if its still there.
If it is then its the gun not clean.

That is what I just said.

You guys may be onto something there. I took it for granted that both the regulator at the gun and compressor are ok. Actually, the regulator at the gun hasnt been adjusting like it should (wont let pressure go above thirty). Unfortunately i wont be able to check till next weekend but i will report back when i do.

Yes you are correct. Technically, that is the way my statement reads sequentially. I shall try to post future responses with grammatical and literary technical precision.
I keep my guns spotless. Many do not and as a result encounter spraying difficulties. At $500 or better a clip I prefer to maintain surgical cleanliness, even with my cheaper models. And even if one does not have expensive guns it's a good habit to develop.

I hear you guys also about keeping the gun clean. I make sure to clean mine after each color like I am about to put it away so I doubt that cleanliness is the issue. I can't afford to be buying another new gun so I treat it well.

Neal, It is a common thing that the regs. cause a problem with air flow.
I have a Devilbiss Millennium for about 8 yrs with the Devilbiss reg. with
no problems with air flow. Now again I had a Devilbiss Finish line that
made you want to throw it against the wall but it was the reg. So I set
it up pulled the reg. off then fine tuned it and alls been good for the last
two yrs.

Just make sure your air is clean and dry as I went over to a friends house
to help him figure out his gun problem (Bink's) and his reg. was screwed
because it had so much crap at it then he ran one of those in line 1/4"
filters. Cleaned up his air, changed his line and alls been good.

A week is pushing it.. Really pushing it.. I don't think I would clear without scuffing..

Thanks for the info normie, I went ahead and color sanded both fenders so they are mostly scuffed anyways I will just need to get in the nooks and crannies then. After that I will need to spray another coat of color anyways. Should some ultra fine scotch brite work? I had planned on spraying tonite only to realize I was out of sealer what a bummer. Oh well should be able to get it done in the morning. On another note I got rid of the regulator on the hardline and my gun seems to be acting better but I haven't sprayed any paint yet.

Guys the paint laid down beautifully today. I actually think the source of the problem was the cap not being tight enough on the gun oddly enough. Should have this truck back together tomorrow and that means the chevelle will finally be retired from daily driver duties! Thanks again for all the help.

We have 2 Devilbliss GTI Milleniums...

Most of the time we take the nozzle and the tip and let them soak in thinner while not it use...

The other day I was shooting etch on a piece of test paper and it wasnt coming out right...

Wasnt the regulator...

We decided to take the gun apart. The pin that hooks to the trigger handle had paint on it. There was also a spring that was caked with paint. We always, ALWAYS run a few ounces of thinner through our guns after EACH use. The crud I pulled out was excessive. Even if you think your gun is clean you should probably take it apart and double check...

I'm curious as to what type of paint you are using. I will be painting a 66 sometime in the future and am trying to decide wheather to use base coat/clear coat or a single stage. Eastwood makes a single stage that can be color sanded which has peaked my interest.

I always run some thinner through the gun after each use also. I took it completely apart and cleaned and cleaned it still seemed to be spraying a bit odd until I tightened the cap some more. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to let the tip soak in thinner for a week or so though.

I know its not a chevelle but since you guys have been so helpful I thought you might wanna see how it turned out. Still have some more re-assembly to do but you get the idea. The only disappointment really was the hood. The clear on the hood got alot of trash in it but I guess that comes with trying to paint a car in a woodshop. I knew better but it was the only area I had available to me.
