We're replacing the centerlink on my son's 71 chevelle. You know the best tool to do this with without messing up the tie rods?

I went to the auto parts store and picked up a pickle fork. That isn't the right name, but they will know what you need. The tool works great.

Also there is a tie rod removal tool that pushes on the center of the stud. The fork works o.k. but be careful of the grease rubbers, don't tear them with the fork.

do your self a big favor and never own a pickel fork. buy, borough or rent the right tool. it has 2 hooks and a threaded rod that presses it apart. i hate pickel forks with a passion. if there ever was a tool i hated the most, thats it. graemlins/angry.gif but let me tell you how i really feel :D

Look in the service manual and see the two-hammer technique that they recommend. It will separate the joints and leave the rubber boot in good shape.

The 'two-hammer' technique works great, but you must have room to swing the hammer. The heavier the sledge the better. The Pitman Arm style of puller works great as well and you can pick one up for about $10. Pickle-forks almost always ruin the rubber dust boots.
