: What order to install interior?

I have now received the following for my 64 malibu SS.

-new carpet/sound deadener.

-new headliner.

-new rear package tray & insulation/trunk divider board & insulation.

What would be the best way to install the items so I do not have to reinstall something. I am thinking to do the headliner first, then the package tray and then the carpet.

I thought I would ask as I often overlook something that should be obvious on projects like this.

Sounds like you have a plan..... I'd start with the headliner then the rear stuff, 1/4 & door panels, floor stuff ( you should have already installed the sound barrier under the dash - if you are doig that...) then the center (if you have a floor shift) then the seats. Finally finish up with the arm rests/window handles & door handles.

That is the way I did mine and it all worked out ok....

That's how just did mine, full interior. Headliner, then sail panels, package tray, door panels, carpet. Then put the seats back in.

I did mine by, carpet/deadener, package tray, rear door panels, original door panels, seats, and next to do is the headliner. Some say headliner first, i'm doing it last. Shouldn't be a problem.

I waited once to have the headliner installed last and the installer had a razor knife in his back pocket (or something sharp) and cut the rear seat.

So..... it is better to do it first - in my opinion.

I didn't want be climbing over new carpeting and seat covers while I did the headliner. Also didn't want to get any of the adhesive on the new interior so I did headliner first. Trust me, the seats will be in the way while you're trying to pull the headliner into place and work out the wrinkles.

Started the headliner today. Have all the bows in and will start stretching it tomorrow. So far its been a snap, only minor trouble that has been easily overcome. As for the seats, I left my front buckets in the car and seems like they have not got in the way at all. Keep in mind these seats are mostly still 1964 vinyl except for a few panels that were repaired back in the 80's. Seats and door panels are last on my list to be replaced and its not a big problem if they get damaged somehow during this install.

Finished the headliner. Still have a few wrinkles in the rear corners that I can not figure out how to remove. All in all it doesn't look to bad, especially since the local quote for a headliner install was $400. I bet if I did it again I could get it perfect now that I have some experience.

Package tray completed and putting in carpet tomorrow.
