I am trying to get the black paint or whatever it is off of the headlight bezels on a '72 chevelle. I have tried brake cleaner and it was taking it off but was looking for an easier way. I don't want to mess them up, but the black is chipped and looks bad.

It would be the one thing I don't have in the garage at the time....

DOT 3 Brake Fluid will probably take it off easier than Brakleen.

This won't mess up the chrome? Got a show this weekend and wanted to get it done before then..

Jon,
Carb cleaner will work also, but dont expect the chrome to be in that great a condition under the paint. I am pretty sure they are supposed to be black anyway. MarHyde's Satin Black Trim paint works perfect :)

The little part that I got off, the chrome doesnt look too bad.. Little pits but I just wanted it to look better than the speckled black and chrome that is there. Thanks for the input. I will try somethings in the morning...

I bought a spray can from NAPA...its a black can and has the word TEC on it...

Try laquer thinner.Works good for paint removal and wont harm the chrome.

I used finger nail polish remover on mine to get the black paint off and it worked great.I know it sounds crazy but it works good.

A Mothers mini-ball with polishing compound will easily take off the paint while polishing the bezels. I just completed mine and they looked so good, I hated to repaint.

Hi, where can I buy MarHyde's Satin Black or somethig that would be the correct black paint for the black on the headlight bezel on a 69 chevelle

I'd would just tape of the chrome areas, sand it down, and repaint the black portions.
(BTW, taping these for painting is a royal pain!!)
