I've never replaced upper ball joints on a 72 and I don't want to give this guy a bad answer. I was asked, "could you please tell us if the top ball joint stem should be pointing outward towards the wheel.the wheels tend to point inward like the control arm is to short and we are not sure if this is correct,WE are in the process of rebuilding our 1972 chevelle and need some info if you don;t mind. Our front tires when you look at the car they look like they go inward on top could you please help us out."

Sounds like the camber is out of whack.

Anyone help?

WOW! The driver side front wheel on my 72 chevelle is the same way. It is tilted very far inward. There are no shims on the control arm either!. Wonder what it could be. I didnt check into it very deeply yet.

Probably frame sag. There are offset upper control arm shafts available to fix this if it's not very severe. Otherwise, they need to take the car to a frame shop to get the engine crossmember pulled down at each side which spreads the upper control arm mounts back out.
