I am restoring a chevelle that use to have a 307, the engine that we have now is not the original engine, The car is a ac car and I would like to eventually get that all operating.

My question: does anyone have a picture on how the ac and alternator brackets mount and where is a good source maybe donor cars to locate the right brackets? It appears that the wiring harness indicates that the alternator was located on the drivers side while the ac compressor was on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The harness has been severely hacked and I am fumbling through that mess. The engine we have for the car has the brackets for the alternator mounting on the passenger side. Also the power steering is on the driver side lower.

Thanks for any help

Bob,

If the alternator has been mounted on the passenger side, then it has been converted to a long water pump. Before you can begin to setup the a/c, you need to change to short style water pump. Then you will need all of the brackets for alternator and a/c.

Here is a thread that shows a pretty good pic:

ok duh I did some research and found that I in deed have the long water pump, You guys already knew that though. I am trying to decide the best route for restoring the AC on the car.

Will I have trouble getting the ac hooked up if say I go with the later year set up where the ac is on the driver side and the alternator is on the passenger side and what if any donor cars would I be looking for?

thanks

Well for the short water pump setup, you could look for brackets from 64-68 chevelle, 64-68 impala, 67-68 camaro. You will need to change the power steering pump bracket as well. Also the bottom brackets will differ for the a/c compressor and alternator if you are using headers or manifolds.

If you wanted to stick with the long pump, any setup from 69-72 chevelle would work, maybe impala, and camaro as well.
