I was at a light in my 68 chevelle (4spd husrt), the light changes, i go to 1st gear..... nothing out of the ordinary. But now as i go to move to 2nd, the stick wouldnt move in. It made a rattleing sound like something was grinding:confused: So i went to 3rd gear instead to avoid any further damage. I come to another light and put the car in neutral and rolled to the light. Light changes, I go into 1st gear. I go to move into 3rd again, but now the Stick wont butch for anything. So i had to make my way home stuck in 1st gear. Even when i got in the driveway it would go into neutral, so i had to stall it to shut her down. Any ideas on whats goin on here? Im not sure on the type of transmission i have. But the car is a 350 with a hurst shifter.

My guess would be the linkage under the car at the transmission is stuck or sticking.

Yeah ,sounds like there's something jamming the linkage.

I looked under when i got her home but it is way to hotoutside to be out there, especially after the car was on. And Actually i do not know why i didnt just turn the key off :o LOL im to used to my dirt bike and quad:cool:

Anyway its not like the trans is blown right? Because then I wouldnt of been able to drive it at all correct?

Have no idea on the condition of the trans but you'll need to look at the shifter & linkage to see if there's anything stuck in either.

OKay I went out and did a little investigating. Im attaching a picture of the linkage. I think i fixed the problem.

The Linkage witht he GREEN dot was in its postion as is now. The linkagewith the YELLOW dot was back further towards the right of the photo. I took my finger and pushed it foward, in the directiong of the YELLOW arrow. Both Linkages have this groove which the WHITE arrow points at. When i pushed the linkage foward the grooves lined up. which is what the picture shows.

The car is shifting again now, I guess it was just stuck? Should there be a bolt or something where the groove is?

I can't really see the pic very well.
What grooves your describing may be the alignment hole.

Yes thanks for the link, I think what I am missing is #17 the Neutral alignment rod. Because there is nothing there, just a hole. Theres a car meet tonight, would you recomend driving the car with out this, the same thing would probably happen again though lol

A # 2 phillips screwdriver fits the alignment hole all the way in - to use that alignment as the starting point for re-adjusting the linkage rods back to a free neutral setting. If it keeps happening, you may need to pull the side cover to check the shifting forks for excess wear and not allowing the gears to return to neutral each shift.

Would i be able to stick the scredriver and leave it in to act as the rod?

Yes ,while your setting the shifter rod adjusters.
You can't leave them in or you'll just lock the shifter in neutral.

You use the "neutral alignment rod" to set up the alignment, BUT once its set, you remove the alignment rod to drive the car (its, the N.A.Rod, only used to set the alignment)...

You can also use a 1/4 allen wrench, etc... Basically anything thats 1/4" diameter and will fit all the way through the shifter...

The "alignment rod" holds all the shift levers in the "neutral" position, and then you can remove the rods from one end, make sure the trans levers are in "neutral", and adjust the rods until they fit perfectly in the levers... Then put all the clips back in and REMOVE the "neutral alignment rod"...

It seems to be shifiting fine, all i did was move one that onething foward.... i havent attempted to drive it yet though. Maybe i aligned it when i pushed it foward. Im going to test drive it now.


EDIT: I just drove it around the block. Its shifiting fine again. Second it a little rough to get into though, but its working again. Is there anything i should keep an eye out for? Someone mention somthing about clips?
