: Please help, problems with the 66's 327 engine................
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 12:40 AM :(:(:(
Could be worse but this is very disappointing and I'm a bit unsure of the problem. I really dont want to tear it apart because it just runs soooo damn well. I was very careful while putting this engine together and really paid attention to detail, you guys know me...
It all started when I drained the break in oil. It had water in it, so I tightened the intake a bit and thought maybe it was just the head bolts seeping and would seal after a heat cycle. If you recall I had these problems with my BBC so I was SUPER careful to make sure I had a thin smear of sealant around every port on both sides of the intake gasket. I mean I really did a good job putting the intake on.

So after that I have run the engine up to temperature 3 times. It starts beautifully and revs amazing and is very smooth. I have kept an eye on the oil dipstick and it didnt appear to be raising.
However, when running it cold, it spews some liquid out of the tailpipe and smokes just a bit as if it were a cold day. Then after warm up no more liquid. It does maybe smell a bit sweet but its very hard to tell.
Pics of liquid from tailpipes. Only when cold. (behind it is from the rain today)

So the dipstick looked fine but I still decided to drain it. Looks like some more water.

So whats the problem here? Heads have been resurfaced twice. Head gasket maybe for the water in the chamber/exhaust, and also into the intake and oil????
Thanks for your help, sorry for the novel.
Dave Aug 11th, 09, 12:45 AM My car spits two wetspots everytime I fire it up, just normal condensation. As far as the cloudy oil, I dunno, maybe the intake to head angle is off, due to resurfacing?
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 12:48 AM Ok so perhaps the condensation is normal. The intake really looks like it lines up well but maybe it doesnt. I will probably take it off tomorrow after I get a few more replies. I suppose a squishier intake gasket and some more rtv on the lower edges.
I used a felpro printo seal intake gasket because I thought they were supposed to be better than the stock felpro ones. I was afraid this was going to happen because of the surfacing and because of my previous problems so I thought I had it covered.
FourEightyNine Aug 11th, 09, 12:49 AM looks like u have moly in the oil, which is normal. And looks significantly better than the first drain which is normal. It will take a while for all the moly to wash out. Whats the liquid out of the tail pipe? Are you sure its not just condinsation out of the exhaust?
Have you checked ur radiator level to see if it has dropped?
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 12:52 AM What does moly in the oil look like? Is the brain look not water and moly instead?
I was going to check radiator level but some came out onto the ground out of the overflow since I dont have a bottle.
The second run doesnt amount to 20 minutes like the first drain though. I would think the moly would be out by now.
davis95 Aug 11th, 09, 12:53 AM If you had the heads and block decked than it is more than likely an intake issue. After you remove the intake make sure it isn't warped before you redo the gasket and put it back on.
Dave Aug 11th, 09, 12:53 AM iF IT IS A CONTINUOS PROBLEM, MAYBE HAVE THE INTAKE CUT TO MATCH THE HEADS. iF i REMEMBER RIGHT, I'VE READ THAT SOMEWHERE.
I hate the caps lock.

Put some left over moly into a little cup of oil and mix it up and see what it looks like.....have u ever got that stuff onto ur hand? you think some oil is going to flush it right out immidiately?:noway:
66Dreamer Aug 11th, 09, 12:53 AM Wwater in the oil usually looks more foamy and milky.yours Almost looks like molly break in lube in the oil.
What does the radiator fluid look like?
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 12:57 AM So maybe this is normal?
Dave Aug 11th, 09, 12:58 AM No, I think you have VERY serious problems. I think you oughtta start pulling it.
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 1:02 AM Just got off the phone with Brian. He seems to think its totally normal and to run it.
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 1:06 AM No, I think you have VERY serious problems. I think you oughtta start pulling it.
You messing with me?
66Dreamer Aug 11th, 09, 1:08 AM I agree.
Last two motors I rebuilt had the first two oil changes look like that.
It turned out to be assembly lube.
Water in oil looks milky.
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 1:09 AM Ok thanks guys. I was just a scared little girl. I'm gonna dump this oil back in then. :D
Kevin R Aug 11th, 09, 1:10 AM Im with Brian and Eric on this one. Looks normal, and Im sure you put a whole tube of lube on your bump stick:D
Dave Aug 11th, 09, 1:12 AM I was just a scared little girl.
We know.

I've heard that asexual people use extra.
FourEightyNine Aug 11th, 09, 1:14 AM I think this thread is breaking records for fastest amount of posts.
Does PMS occur over a period of 5 minutes in Asexual people?
Dave Aug 11th, 09, 1:14 AM Hows that?
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 1:15 AM Phewwww, what a relief. Not knowing the brain texture you can see how I was scared. Especially since it looked just like my BB last year! Why didnt anyone tell me this before I ripped apart the big block!?!
my 454 oil

Its all ur fault Dave.
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 1:16 AM Yea 2 pages in like 5 minutes. Everyone loves my drama I guess.

FourEightyNine Aug 11th, 09, 1:20 AM I tried to find a pic of milky oil but came up with this instead and thought it would be alot more interesting.

I think it more manifests itself as being "stupid" in appearance, thus, using Brett as a test subject, i would have to say it's a full time condition.
Dave Aug 11th, 09, 1:23 AM lol I'm sorry, I was disappointed and scarred. :(
Sounds like My Wife after sex...............:D
cobaltchev67 Aug 11th, 09, 1:27 AM Dang, I got here too late:sad:. It's going to take some pretty good heat cycles to burn off/dissipate all that extra asexual overly done bumpstick moly lube:D.....all you did is mix it up. My oil never looked like that though from what I remember after the break-in, and I think I put a good bit on....may be the brand of moly lube you used. I have frequent exhaust condensation spots too.
Water would definitely make the oil milky. I used to drive a work van that I checked the 'mud' in. Even after an oil change it was still mud, not oil....but it was a 1978 Ford 6 cylinder so I didn't expect much.
FRYNTYR Aug 11th, 09, 1:35 AM I too think it's normal. Moly lube won't clear out in just 20 minutes. Watch your water level and if you think it's still questionable I have a radiator pressurizer to see if the cooling system holds. If it doesn't, there's a leak and the gauge should show a drop rather quickly.
The exhaust pipe condensation is normal.
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 1:42 AM Sweeeeet! Thanks guys. 5 lashings for me. It really is going to be an awesome engine. :hurray: I already poured it back in. :D
gotago Aug 11th, 09, 9:27 AM No, I think you have VERY serious problems. I think you oughtta start pulling it.
And we wonder why Dave is the way he is............:D

2 words, child molestation.
mattiepschevelle Aug 11th, 09, 1:53 PM Why not just put new oil in?
Brettd85 Aug 11th, 09, 1:55 PM Why not just put new oil in?
This is new oil. I drained the break in oil. Then filled her up with fresh delo and a bottle of comp cams break in lube. I will run this about 500 miles then change it again. This oil only has about 10 to 15 minutes on it. And if its moly residue in the oil and not water, its only going to help things. :D
FRYNTYR Aug 11th, 09, 2:54 PM a bottle of comp cams break in lube.
mattiepschevelle Aug 11th, 09, 3:29 PM ok gotcha! I missed that part. I was so affraid to start my bb for the first time! my heads were shaved .045 and they took .065 off the intake side, I had to take off a bunch off the bottom of the intake to make it sit good, and I ran the extra thick intake gaskets and a fat bead of sealant on ends! i thought for sure it was gonna leak but so far so good! It sucks because that intake is probably no good for any other engine now.

I'm still Wayyyyy faster then you.
