hi every body I just put a reco 454 in me 68 malibu . ran the cam in at 2000 rpm and it sounded good . Droped the rev's down to idle and there is noisey lifters .so i ajusted them and the noise was still there . i took it for a drive to run the motor in when the rev's were over 1500 the noise went away . I took one of the rocker covers off ond started it up and there was very little oil coming out

Do you have high bleed lifters?

Jason, did you change oil and filter post cam/lifter breakin/
Sometimes an oil filter can be partially plugged with assmbly lube which can lower oil psi some so change the oil and filter ASAP to see if that helps.
Just as long as yousee some oil comming out of pushrods your ok,doesnt have to be sraying ut all over the place.
And also keep in mind that with motor hot and at idle esp with auto trans where idle is lower then with man trans the oil presure could be as low as 20lbs even with a new motor and running thin oil.

i ran the cam in on 10-30 weight oil , oil was very dirty so i used some engine flush to help clean the s#*t out of the engine then changed it to 20-50 with new filter . the only thing i know about the lifters is thay are total seal hydrolic lifters . the oil presure at idle is 40 psi and goes up to 50/60ish with the senser at the front driver side of the block . thanks for giving us your time to help me solve this problem jason

aditive you put into the oil when it is running then run it for about 15 minutes then drain the oil out , it helps flush all the crap out .

I know what it is , was wondering about the need to flush 'crap' from a fresh engine.

the people that rebuilt the motor mustn't of cleaned it proderly and i thought the lifters were blocked with gunk but it wasn't to be

Wonder if the oil pickup might have some 'crap' restricting it.

When you say lifters were spongy are they noisey?
i am asking because you saidyou used 10-30 oil and additive for breakin, what addiitev was used and how much of it?
Most all 10-30 oils in USA other then valovlines vr1 race oil (i see your an Ausi from down under) dont have near enough zddp for safe flat tappet cam./lifter breain.
so if the oil additive you used for cam breakin didnt have enough zddp in it along with an oil tat maybe had low zddp you may have a cam going flat and thats the crap/metal cotam your seeing in oil.

when i was ajusting the rockers the lifters felt soft as in spring and didn't hold any presure . the oil was dark gray to black in colour after cam run in like thay didn't clean the block after machining it . the noise was there on start up after ajusting them .theres no oil presure at the lifters under 1500 rpm
