While dis-assembling a friends '71 Chevelle, we ran across this little do-dad behind the rear seat. Can't figure out what it is.
Any ideas what it is and what it is for?
Thanks,

It is part of the evap emission system, the fuel tank vent lines feed into it. Are you sure it is a 71 or a 72?

It is called a fuel vapor separator.

Thought it was a '71. Might be a '72. It is solid on top, are the vapors supposed to go into and and then somewhere else. The engine bay as the evap canister as well. Isn't that to collect tank fumes? He's going to register it as an antique vehicle, so the emisions stuff won't be needed as we don't have emission or safety inspection for an antique vehicle.
Thanks for the solution!

The black container under the hood is called a charcoal canister. It collects the vapors seperated by the thing behind the rear seat. The fuel tank has three vents that go to the seperator behind the seat, then the vapors go to the charcoal canister, they then go into the carburetor to be burned when the engine is running.
