I was at NAPA getting an air filter for the Escort and started talking to a guy who said he bought a new Gobi Beige '70 LS6 El Camino with the TH400 and he also said he ordered it on the dealer checklist with the LS7? I didn't think this was possible, but I figured that he would know better than me, since he bought the car new. Could this have been? He was a nice guy. No reason for him to lie. It must have been a heck of a fun car.

The LS7 was not available in a car from the factory...only over the counter.

That's what I thought. I guess 40 years will change a story a little. He was pretty sold on the story.

Are you sure it wasn't an El Rancho? I had a guy telling me all about one he use to have. I didn't have the patience to ask him if he had a Ford or a Chevy to figure out if he had an El Camino or a Ranchero. Honestly, by that point I didn't really care.

Was the LS7 a complete motor or a head option? Over the counter, what kind of power did this add? Where there many ordered?

Hi!
My "El Camino Literature" says, LS7 were "dealer installed". This says, it was possible to get aluminium heads instead of normal LS6 heads, when you ordered them. But the car did not leave the factory with those heads, maybe the car was a LS6-powered with additional aluminium heads (LS7 - option) in the trunk  , which had to be fixed by the dealer.
The power was just the same. Car had less weight, I donīt know the difference in kilogram.

Is it possable that dealer was offering the LS7 as an upgrade and the dealer installed it before he picked up the car? Seems like the extra charge would be a lot, but if it happened this way I could see where he thought he had an original LS7 camino.

The LS7 engine had Iron heads. The aluminum head option was L89.
