first of all let me say how much I apprecitate this site... I am obsessed with my 66 malibu, and being able to talk to you all helps me imensley, that said, I cut my back springs and now I'm hooked I'm gonna cut them more... I also want to cut the front, and was going to wait til I had the money to buy a rebuild kit for the front, but I don't want to wait... I want to get the stance, then get the new bussings etc... can someone write a detailed step by step plan to just getting that front coil out so I can cut it...? Thanks again....

If you insist on cutting the front springs. Do not use heat, like with a torch. Use a hax saw or a cutoff wheel.

Personally. I would just spring for a new set of lowered springs. I have Hotchkiss on my 66SS. Nice quality and they were not that expensive. Little over 100 bucks.

Chris.

I hope you don't bottom out or tear the oil pan off the bottom of it.

removing front control arms or A arms has been discussed many times in this forum. Search "removing control arms" or "A arms" or something similar. If you cant find the instructions you need, post back and I can take you through it.

Thanks bhwak, I figured. I should have asked if there were any secret procedures to make the cut easier... I don't actually need you to walk me through it...
chevydog66, will cutting the springs make the oil pan any closer to the ground? love your pictures, thanks

Yes, cutting the springs will put the pan closer to the ground. I did this on my 65 hdtp. It caused me to scrape the bottom of my 7qt stock style pan on deep dips in the road, but it was about an inch and a half below the frame. I ended up getting a 7qt pan that spread outward on the sides (Milodon). If you use a stock pan that doesn't protrude past the front crossmember, you'll likely be ok.
It definitely looked sweet with the raked stance it gave me.

I'm just saying that you could bottom out the front crossmember or headers, or exhaust. Simply because by cutting the springs you will have less spring travel, and you will of course be closer to the ground. I cut 1 round out of the springs on the front of my 72 GMC truck, and it looks pretty good. I'm just saying that much more than that could be too much. Then you will have to buy a new set of springs anyway. Good luck.

i have allway cut my springs ,since i was 18 and never had a problem, but i only cut 1/2 to 3/4 and the springs were in good shape to begain with, but if one side is higher than the other i would just get new ones,i read once that when you cut the spring it also increases the spring rate
