: '65 radiator w/auto transcooler
richietables Aug 7th, 09, 2:15 PM I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a radiator for a '65 Malibu with an automatic... Summit has the correct thing from Be Cool, but for something just under $700 bucks. I was hoping not to go that high for this. Anybody know of another (drop in) alternative? Thanks

Put a B&M tranny cooler and AC condensor in front and dual fans behind.
richietables Aug 8th, 09, 7:30 AM Thanks- I'm running a separate cooler for trans now (no AC), but I'm not sure I've got it mounted in the right spot. Should it be to the side of the radiator, the middle, what? I think it's blocking some of the flow cooling of the rad when I'm sitting in traffic. Does the cooler NEED to be actually attached to the radiator or can it somehow be rigged in front, slighty separated?

You should always run the trans cooler in the rad tank its 4 times more efficiant there a air to air cooler .. anything in front of the rad is a deficiate to cooling .

richietables Aug 8th, 09, 9:10 AM Thanks, Don- I'll certainly keep you guys in mind when I get the $$ together for a new unit. In the meantime, I've been running a non-cooler rad. for the past couple of years after the stock original gave out. Two questions: What's the best location for the separate cooler, and is it possible to take the whole thing to a local shop and have them run a line through the tank for it? (is it cost prohibitive to do that?)
Thanks

there are many guys running external coolers .. thinking they dont want to put the heat back into the coolant ..if you mount it in front of the rad .. where do you think the heat goes ?? i ask them .. then they go uhhhh ok
keep in mind if you see 200 degrees on your dash gauge for engine temp the cooler in the cool side of the rad may be seeing coolant 40 degrees cooler ..thats why its on the cooler side of the rad ..and its 4 times more efficiant then a air to air alone ...if your running a air to air cooler alone it better be big to do the same job ..yes you can mount it under the car somewhere in the path of air ... there are some that have a seperate fan to mount about any where you have room .
do a search on google or summit for trans oil coolers .

MikeMalibu Aug 8th, 09, 11:45 AM Maybe it's belt and suspenders, but I'm running the tranny fluid through the radiator and then through a tranny cooler. There have been many posts on this subject and lots of different opinions. In the end, I followed the recommendation of the tranny builder, a large volume manufacturer. I'll watch the temperature through the 4 seasons and then make adjustments if necessary. Then I'll know for sure. I can always cap off the tranny cooler and use just the radiator or vice versa.
For a '65, the center grille mount prevents a large cooler from being used. A small style fits vertical off to the right side. I made some brackets that span the vertical dimension of the AC condensor, which has a row of existing mounting holes. I used a 7500 BTU stacked plate cooler measuring 11"x4.5"x1.5".
On mounting the Alumitech radiator, with the dual fan arrangement I couldn't use the stock radiator shroud. Not enough clearance to the belt pulleys. Instead I mounted it directly to the core support. All four mounting holes on the radiator lined up with a small amount of reaming. I suppose I could have narrowed the stock shroud, but it didn't seem necessary and I'm keeping all the stock parts for the future.
Any comments on the above?
richietables Aug 8th, 09, 2:16 PM Mike, my '65 didn't have a fan shroud when I got it-- Did it come with one originally?
MikeMalibu Aug 9th, 09, 3:10 AM Maybe "shroud" isn't the correct word. There is a 4-sided spacer between the core support and the radiator, about 3"-4" wide and the outline of the radiator.
richietables Aug 9th, 09, 7:50 AM I see. I have that spacer... I'll rig up a way to use the cooler that I have but away from the rad. this morning using the spacer, keeping it off the unit but in the air. The tranny, bone stock TH350 rebuild, is a dog and hopefully will be going away sometime soon for an OD. This will all do until I get fed up and spend the $$ on the proper radiator setup. Thanks for your help.
65Camino Sep 3rd, 09, 10:40 PM You can add a tranny cooler if you don't have airconditioning. I am running a four core brass Camaro radiator and Tauris electric fan. Four core will only work with a short water pump. I cut large hole in the plate for air to move thur the core. I run the tranny lines to this ad on cooler first, then thru the radiator.
