I can't find my last post so I will try again, I hope I didn't do something wrong and it was removed
I bought a new fender and it has a dark coating on it that looks like a dark primer, do I still have to prime it with primer paint
If I do do I have to sand it first, if so, what grade sand paper should I use
Thanks for any help
Jerry

Yes Jerry, you should sand it first. You could use some 600 wet paper, then I would prime it with catalyzed urethane primer, before blocking it out and shooting color/clear.

Nope, too fine of grit. There are 2 kinds of EDP coatings...good and bad. Bad comes off on a rag with lacquer thinner and should be removed with 80 grit prior to epoxy primer. Good does not come off with thinner and should be sanded for adhesion anyway but complete removal is controversial. As insurance it is removed for restos. However, in 20 years of collision work it was simply sanded, sealed and painted. Wet or using duck butter (sanding paste). No repair ever failed.

Good info Scott has here for the EDP coating.
First time I've heard "duck butter" on here, learn something every day. At work we use a "duck rubber" to smooth tape onto duct work.

All the new panels we hit them with 80 on a block and see how they look (it also removes they cheap black.) Most of the time we have them blasted just to be safe. Im glad we dont use many repro panels.
