: Clutch Linkage - Muncie 4 Speed
Murphy66 Aug 5th, 09, 10:42 PM I just replaced the z bar on my 66 Malibu (327) and when I got the old one off I realized there had been some "improvised welding" in order to make the lower clutch rod fit properly. With the correct z-bar installed the rod is not quite long enough (fully extended) to fully engage the clutch. I'm thinking it may not be the correct rod, and was wondering if anyone has seen this issue before or have any input as to fixing the problem. I hope it is a simple "buy a longer adjustable lower rod" fix but I want to do it right.
Rich-L79 Aug 5th, 09, 11:55 PM Aftermarket clutch? Then buy a longer adjustable lower rod.
Murphy66 Aug 6th, 09, 12:44 AM I've seen a few different types of lower rods online...just not sure which is right. Sorry, I'm still pretty new at this, learning as I go. Is that something parts stores might carry or am I pretty much limited to the internet? It would be easier for me to judge if its the right length by seeing it in person. Thanks for the quick response.
MEJ1990TM Aug 6th, 09, 2:48 AM Is the Z bar the part that connects to the bracket that bolts to the frame? I am fairly sure that is what you guys are talking about since you are talking about the lower clutch rod.
Just want to clarify. I have always heard it called the clutch cross shaft.
Murphy66 Aug 6th, 09, 8:44 AM It is a z shaped part of the linkage that attaches from the upper rod (to clutch pedal) down to the frame, over to the block and down to the lower rod (to the shift fork). The lower rod is where my problem is occurring.
rocks66ss Aug 6th, 09, 9:33 AM I have my original out of my car. I can take a couple of digital pics tonight and post it for you with some measurements if you like.

Murphy66 Aug 6th, 09, 3:49 PM That would be great Rocky, thanks!
Rich, that doesnt look anything like what I have...mine has a 90 degree post on the end that attached to the lower z bar with a hole for a cotter pin to hold it in place...unless the one in the link connects differently.
Murphy66 Aug 6th, 09, 4:26 PM I stand corrected Rich, I see how it connects...and adjusts while installed. I'll be ordering a set today, thanks for the assist. I read this...makes sense to me now.

Murphy66 Aug 6th, 09, 10:37 PM Thanks Rocky, I can tell the pitch of mine is slightly different which may account for the lower rod not being long enough.
