My buddy told me that thier is a gto 12:1 steering box that is a direct bolt in for my 65 chevelle that I can pick up at any parts store but he couldn't remember the year and model to ask for. Does anyone have any information on this.

Pick up a zq8 s10 steering box. Bolts right in. Take the chevelle steering arm and bolt it onto the steeering box. The zq8 boxes go on ebay for around 110 usually. You will also need a adapter kit from lee manufacturing to convert fittins over to the old style.

same deal, but you can use a 88 monte carlo ss box.

Early Chevelles, like yours, had gears that had full travel pitman shafts (87 degrees lock to lock).

You want a steering gear with pitman shaft travel roughly equal to your original gear otherwise your turning circle can get quite large.

Monte Carlo gears typically had travel around 78 degrees. This will cause you turning circle to increase quite a bit.

This paper describes differences between modern fast ratio gears and your original 1965 gear. Modern gears do have the same mounting pads and will bolt right up to the frame with no problems.

This is the link to the paper.

This excel spread sheet lists Chevelle steering gears starting in 1965.

These are two excel spread sheets that list fast ratio gears. You want to select a gear that has travel roughly the same as your original gear. You wouldn't necessarily have to go to a salvage yard to obtain gears that are listed on the spread sheets. You could ask for a remanufactured gear the same as the the make and model gear on the spread sheets.
