ok, this is really bugging me and a google search turned up no results. The first time I heard the term was in 2 lane blacktop, the driver says "make it 3 yards and you have an automobile race" I heard the term again this weekend while watching Rocky. Rocky was to collect 2 yards from a guy on the docks. I assume 1 yard is slang for 100 bucks but some of you old guys ;) have to know.

Well, I am one of those "old guys" and don't recall every using that phrase in my younger years

When I first saw that movie I had no idea what it meant until another guy in the movie a little later said they were racing for $300.

From an old ny "street racer" a yard is $100.00 ps back in the 1960's we would charge "a yard" just to open our hood !!!!!!!! Bob Rizzi

Kind of reminds me of an old episode of the Supranos featuring a high stakes poker game. 1 box of baked ziti refered to IIRC, 1000 bucks, although its been so long, im thinking it may have been 5K actually.

I have the VHS version, so you'll have to excuse me from the lower sound quality. That's the best I could come up with. Regardless, $300 for a race in 1971 would be close to $1000 today. Where do you come up with that kind of money on a weekend when the banks were closed?

US Currency and Slang - from the B-Movies!

We have all heard them, but what do they actually mean?

Bill:Paper currency. eg. A dollar bill. Sometimes means a 100 dollar bill.
Nickelodeon:Early type of jukebox. Pianola (some charged 5 cents per tune). Cinema which charged 5 cents for admission.
Nickel and Dime:Low cost, cheap, trivial. "Nickel and Dime Store" = shop selling cheap everyday items.
Bit:12½ cents. Possibly because an early Spanish peso coins could be divided into eight real pieces. (ie. The "Pieces of eight" beloved by pirates and buccaneers.)
Two-bit (slang):25 cents. Cheap. Insult. "You two-bit, low down, yellow bellied ...."
Buck:A dollar.
Yard:100 dollars.
C-note:100 dollars. Also just "C."
Big one:1000 dollars. "That'll cost you ten big ones!"
Grand:1000 dollars.
Green-back (slang):US paper currency. Currency bills with green printing on the reverse.

I used to work with this young whippersnapper who always referred to things that were cheap by saying "A dime and a dozen". I told him it's "a dime a dozen" several times and he never changed what he said. I always kept hearing "a dime and a dozen". Cracked me up every time. :D

Yup!

A few years back at a swap meet, a couple of guys were looking over some stuff a buddy and I had for sale. They were kind of snide and disapproving of our stuff, no big deal, typical tire kickers that spend the day at a swap meet and buy nothing but know everything. One of 'em mutters "I wouldn't give more than half a rocker arm for that" pointing at something we had for sale (don't recall the item) in a way that you knew that thought it was too high. Right away my buddy snaps back "that's worth way more than fifty bucks". They were sorta shocked we broke their code and move along rather quickly. :)
