Is there a modified insert on the market for 66 ss to allow air intake through orginal hood
to get better airflow to the top of the aircleaner/carb.

Not that I have seen. I am sure something could be made.

I saw a 66 with a cowl induction air cleaner at a car show last week. Owner said it was a GM option. Enclosed air cleaner with a duct that ran to the firewall above the heater box. Then a hole in the firewall that sucked air from the right side grill below the windshield. Very unusual.

Very unusual.I don't think it was a regular production option (RPO) since there's no record of it as such but I think it was offered as a dealer installed item. There's someone making them now in the aftermarket but don't remember who.

I have wondered if there was a way to modify the original hood inserts to be like a grill or vent to let out the hot air under the hood, but still appear stock?

There was a guy making really nice reproduction cowl induction units, Nelson I think was his name?

Years ago I took a very small drill and drilled a series of holes down each one of the little ridges. It took forever, but I was in the last three months of my "Air Force" Career(four years is enough for anybody). When it was all done it looked pretty cool, but once it rained it was a whole different situation.Water seemed to just leak onto everything. They were replaced within a week.

I would suggest that if you really like everything but the price, you start posting a WTB ad or start searching on some of sites where the part is not considered cast from "unobtainium".

Someone out there has one they no longer want.

I wanted an original 67 vette tri-power manifold and carbs for my BBC. Initial rounds of pricing had the whole set-up in the $4,000-$6,000 range for used, refurbed, or repop'ed.

I little searching and patience landed me one with 3 brand new carbs for $1,700 shipped that was listed on the H.A.M.B site. I spent another $175 to bring it back to "new" condition.

I found 4 others in the same range (various conditions and parts) and the fellow I bought it from emailed me to let me know he had another one if I wanted it (no carbs).

Don't settle, don't rush. Plan your plan and do it the way you want. Good luck!

You could fab up a nice one of your own for a lot less but of course it might not look like an original.

May be a stupid question, but is there any way that you would suck in water with that set up (say during a downpour)?

Not much you can really do with the stock hood. Might want to get the air cleaner box with two snorkerls that uses the duct work that goes under the front bumper.

Obviously you have never had to look for a highly sought after, and rare part for your year car. This repo is a perfect reproduction, and an original might run you between 5-6000. It's no different than the guy who spent $1000.00 for a remote NOS mirror. It's all in what you want and what your willing to pay.

At $2395.00 it's a bargin, especially if you were in the market trying to find an original.
