kettbo Aug 1st, 09, 2:11 AM Good turnout at the track; Kevin, Cobalt Mike, Uncle Tracy, The Loader1 family and mobile condo, Chad and Bianca and Kettbo.
Over-torqueing and excess RTV aside, Chad's car performed really well tonight
OutCast Aug 1st, 09, 2:19 AM What kind of times did you run, George ?
Kevin R Aug 1st, 09, 2:23 AM I ran 4 runs. First run was a 12.35 spinning second was a 12.65 spinning
I then lowered the air pressure from 20 to 16 and ran in the left lane ( was better than the right) and it hooked but I was expecting spin so I didn't leave very hard and ran a best 11.75 @ 115 with a 1.75 60'. I then got right back in line did a small burn out and staged. I swear the front tires lifted but no witness to the event. I could tell I was on a run and it was moving. Then after I shifted into 3rd gear and hit 5000 it just stopped making power. Not a total power loss but like the valves floated. I was going through the traps on all other runs at 6000 RPM. Well I thought that run was a bust but when I got the slip to my surprise I went 1.593 60' 11.511 but at only 108.89 as I lost power at 5000. I didn't run again as the motor doesn't sound the same as before. I got it home and it seems to run fine but lots of valve train noise. I will look at it soon.
If It went all the way to 6000 on that run I was looking at a day ending run as I don't have a roll bar:hurray::yes:
kettbo Aug 1st, 09, 2:26 AM Interesting evening for me....
New DRs from Kevin this week...mounted them on my Elky's Welds and headed to the track.
In one crazy, never to be repeated moment in time....I had one of my best RTs and caught 'The Gloved One'...held him off for all of 60'... then he obliterated me.... That early the lanes were terrible and the Red 67 was all over the lane.
Several passes later I inadvertantly left the fanbelt at the start line and ran a 1.837 60' and 13.121 @ 101.82. Lose a fanbelt and go a tenth quicker and 1 mph faster. Still hunting traction, next run....Chad nipped me. Next run, dropped 1 PSI in the tires, nipped him.
I later ran a 1.855 13.277 101.11. This was still breaking the tires loose.
Lotsa 9, 10, 11 sec cars there but it was great...9 passes without trying.
I tossed the fanbelt again just minutes from home.....nice
OutCast Aug 1st, 09, 2:29 AM Nice 60' on that last run Kevin. I would agree you probably yarded the front end with that kind of a launch.
11.51...
Kevin R Aug 1st, 09, 2:33 AM Nice 60' on that last run Kevin. I would agree you probably yarded the front end with that kind of a launch.
11.51...
Thanks John. I did the 1/8 mile calculator and it says if I would of ran it out it should of been 11.30
kettbo Aug 1st, 09, 2:34 AM I swear the front tires lifted but no witness to the event. I could tell I was on a run and it was moving. Now I've got you and Kevin out to get me.
I think I may be done until next year. I really dont want to cage my car and now I have proven that it will run faster than 11.49 + it seems to be pretty hard on my car. Hopfully I didnt do damage on that last run.
66Dreamer Aug 1st, 09, 3:03 AM Awesome job guys. I wish I could have been there with ya.
Juhosaphat Aug 1st, 09, 5:19 AM Still hunting traction, next run....Chad nipped me. Next run, dropped 1 PSI in the tires, nipped him.
You took me off the line on that second run but what were the final times again George? Taking somebody off the line doesn't mean you won ;)
TW really performed tonight with an all time best of 13.16 @ 101.54 mph with a 1.84 60' and .035 r/t. I don't have to throw belts to run in the 13.1 range George :p
I can definitely see atleast a 13 flat on motor from TW with a little more tweaking and some suspension work. Right now the rear end is all stock arms and rubber bushings. Even the original springs. Only thing new are the shocks.
But yeah, I'm definitely happy with the way she performed tonight and I didn't have any kind of problems on the way home either. Her temperamental side is starting to phase out for a little while. Maybe now's the time to really make her shine  And no George, I don't mean paint.
Juhosaphat Aug 1st, 09, 5:19 AM Awesome job guys. I wish I could have been there with ya.
Me too. I was hungry as hell and never turn down free food ;)

yah but George drives a TRUCK....;)
mr 4 speed Aug 1st, 09, 9:43 AM Hey George, glad to hear you made it out again
Did you have that other crank pulley on there?
Almost 102 MPH...did you notice at what RPM you are crossing the stripe at?
Kevin, nice job on the 1.59 60 ft and 11.51
Juhosaphat Aug 1st, 09, 11:28 AM yah but George drives a TRUCK....;)
Now that the car's running better you're running out of crap to say? lol :p
1966malibu Aug 1st, 09, 12:04 PM All I have to say is good job everybody .
The rest of the 13 sec. crew is heading for the 12's and Kevin will be asking the age old Question "to cage or not to cage".
I am going to have to be real busy over the winter to try keep up with Chad and George .

mr 4 speed Aug 1st, 09, 12:08 PM George, don't forget to change your signature to reflect your new best of 13.12 @ 101.82 MPH
kettbo Aug 1st, 09, 12:34 PM You took me off the line on that second run but what were the final times again George? Taking somebody off the line doesn't mean you won ;)
Chad,
You have it all wrong! In a race where it is this close, I treed you, held you off the whole track and won (noted on the bottom of the time slip, WIN LEFT LANE)......just as you beat me the previous run.
Yes, you had a good string of runs going. Can't deny that.
Chris,
The pulley was not on the car. Coulda used the deep groove for sure. I did note the extra power of the run without accessories, so to speak. You can bet the pulley is on, and a bunch of other stuff too, for the next outing.
I'll PM the list tonight.
I had a blast just seeing Cobalt Mike's car there!
Juhosaphat Aug 1st, 09, 12:38 PM I stand corrected! lol Just grabbed all my slips and found it, and it was a hell of a race :beers:
First Chad vs. George race:
Chad/George
.075/.111
1.882/1.906
5.451/5.524
8.447/8.547
82.00 mph/81.61 mph
11.065/11.182
13.306/13.425
100.31 mph/100.27 mph
Second Chad vs. George race:
Chad/George
.206/.134
1.896/1.893
5.470/5.500
8.471/8.522
81.86 mph/81.48 mph
11.095/11.146
13.343/13.385
99.97 mph/100.45 mph
Definitely a good race and you did in fact hold me off barely :p
Juhosaphat Aug 1st, 09, 1:06 PM And before I forget, HUGE thanks to Kevin for bringing a helmet for me to race with. I wouldn't have even had a chance to have any kind of day, let alone my best day yet, without it. I owe you big time Kevin, thanks :beers:
Kevin R Aug 1st, 09, 1:44 PM No Problem Chad.
Well I went down and took off the valve covers. Nothing out of the ordinary. Couple of rockers couple thou loose but not something that would stop making power.
Looked under the car and one bolt from my header flange was missing its bolt and the drivers side had one loose bolt. That could account for the what sounded like valve train noise along with the looser rockers.
I remembered that when I pulled into the pits after the run I noticed that the throttle cable. There is a mount for the cable that is connected to the rear carb stud and nut. It has a small lock nut and screw that holds it in place when the throttle is being depressed. Anyway it was loose and pulled forward which is the way it is being pull when the throttle is being depressed.
Anyway I checked for full throttle with it loose and the throttle is not all the way open. Maybe another 1/8" of movement. I'm hoping and thinking that this is the problem and the noises I was hearing was the exhaust.
So if that's true I was flying down the track and just before the line at 5000 that throttle bracket slips which closes the throttle just enough to not let it go to 6000 rpm resulting in a lower MPH.
I will know more next week when I have time to adjust the valves and get the exhaust bolted up better. Then I can take it out and see what happens.
Juhosaphat Aug 1st, 09, 1:52 PM If it ran 11.51 in yesterdays heat with a loose throttle bracket, you're definitely getting kicked off next time
dreis454 Aug 1st, 09, 2:08 PM Now that the car's running better you're running out of crap to say? lol :p
nope I got ALOT more.........I didn't want to make you cry;)
your car really IS running better, but I'd like to see what happens when George gets his real converter in there.
BTW what does 'TW' stand for?

Me cry? You sir, have jokes haha
cobaltchev67 Aug 1st, 09, 4:01 PM Official results? I'm slow and I have a lot of work to do. On the video of a few of my runs, there's what looks like raw fuel just spewing out of the exhaust and you can definitely tell when I shift as the mist disappears for a split second. Going to pull the plugs today and have a look-see, maybe pull the valve covers and check the lash(haven't checked that since I broke the engine in years ago). I find it interesting my tuning is to lean stuff out while everyone else is needing more fuel.....maybe I should check the rear bowl and see if that little flapper back there came off too dumping fuel just like the front bowl was.
I need to see if I can get the shift linkage filed down a bit more and not bind against itself when it wants to. No problems with that on the runs, but trying to get into a gear, any gear when sitting in line or grabbing my timeslip is not cool. Since the shifter and linkage is new, I'm sure it needs a lot more shifting/wear to work perfectly. I also need to check the reverse lever clearance against the O/D adapter....I had to grind on the adapter just so I could shift to reverse but it bound a few times yesterday and once last night after I got the car off the trailer.
A fun day for sure and I got 7 runs in, the first run being the fastest by far.
Kevin R Aug 1st, 09, 8:39 PM If it ran 11.51 in yesterdays heat with a loose throttle bracket, you're definitely getting kicked off next time
It was def on a 11.3-4 pass:yes: In better air and traction like that Im sure it has an 11.2 in it somewhere. If Im going to get kicked off the track I dont want an 11.49 I want something faster:D
Oh and like Darry always said " Easy 10s in the WN":D

Juhosaphat Aug 2nd, 09, 12:30 AM Anybody know how Loader did?
He was running 12.40's all day and he continued that into today for Super Shifters. Made it to the finals and lost with a -.014 light. Took home 170$ and a runner up trophy. Well worth it if you ask me
I'm sure he'll have much more detail when he gets back on.

Screaming deal if it is real!
um...........
cobaltchev67 Aug 2nd, 09, 4:29 AM Just thought I'd post what I found today.....
Most(around 75-80% I think) of the rocker arms were loose, like 3/4 turn loose, the #2 cylinder arms were about 1 turn loose. As I mentioned before I haven't touched them in years. I adjusted them all again with the EOIC method and the plugs out.....which were all almost soaked with fuel and brings me to the next finding.
I, like Kevin had my throttle cable bracket move....except it wasn't just a little. It moved forward 1+ inch and I'm guessing I was going down the track at around 1/2 throttle on all passes. I made a little bracket today to brace against the base plate and it cannot move forward any longer....I also shortened the cable a bit to accomodate moving the bracket a little as the cable was not taut.
So, I got to thinking about the soaked plugs. If I'm at half throttle, would the accelerator pumps be pumping the same amount of fuel as at full throttle? The butterflies are half open so half of the amount of air is getting in there vs. twice as much fuel the engine needs for that throttle position? That would definitely explain it for a long duration of double fuel/single air ratio. I have some Buna-N gaskets coming on Tuesday, so I don't want to tear into the secondary bowl until I have those gaskets...just thinking of possibilities before I make a change.
Whatcha think?
gotago Aug 2nd, 09, 9:41 AM Thanks Chad:thumbsup:

Big thanks for the pics Tracy, they're awesome  Can't wait to see the videos

now spend a few bucks on cosmetic items..... If nothing else.....get those Appliance wheels blasted and paint them one color until you get rubber for your other set of Vette wheels. Then get that beast one color....it'll go faster, I swear!
mattiepschevelle Aug 3rd, 09, 1:23 AM if chad painted his car it would lose the parasite drag!
Mike, I like the supports at the rear of the trailer, but Man, those things are just waiting to rip right down the side of your car some day.

Juhosaphat Aug 3rd, 09, 1:32 AM If Chad painted his car, maybe Bianca would buy a passenger seat, and ride in it with him.
CHAD already bought a passenger seat and brackets. Just Bianca can't make up her mind on whether or not she likes being able to sleep on the way to and from the track when she rides with me :D
cobaltchev67 Aug 3rd, 09, 2:09 AM Mike, I like the supports at the rear of the trailer, but Man, those things are just waiting to rip right down the side of your car some day.
I put the jackstands down first thing when driving the car on and off the trailer, so nothing will hit it. I actually cut the tops down of the square outer welded on portions about 4" height from where they were when I bought them.....blew out a tire on that old Dodge truck I had when I had the stands all the way down but the welded on parts sticking up winching it on the trailer and the corner blew out the sidewall pretty good. Now that you mention it, I think I'll cut the tops of the actual inner stand parts down as well....at least down to the top pin hole. As you can imagine I'm pretty careful when hauling the car.....I take a good look around before doing any loading/unloading.
Thanks for the concern though, I definitely appreciate the mention of something I should fix.
I need to get those new fenders on and at least paint the wheels, it's starting to bug me now.
loader1 Aug 3rd, 09, 2:16 AM Just got in from unloading. The ONLY downfall of going rounds on Sunday is that you get out of there so late. Lost today in the semis because of driver error,....got treed.:boring: That red -.014 tomato in the final yesterday was still in my head today. The car ran 12.43 on a 12.40 dial. Ended up with 2 trophies and $265, so I'm happy.
Friday night was a blast and it was fun to see those that made it. Thanks to Tracy for the pics and it was good to meet you.
Mike's car is awesome in person and the pics don't do justice to the amount and quality of the work he has done. I'm sure he'll get his issues figured out and do well next time out.
The banter between George and Chad is nothing but pure entertainment. The Rat and Mouse game was fun to watch. I swear every time Chad headed out to make a pass, George was running for the car. Chad made a hell of an improvement, as evidenced by the sweat on George's brow. George's El Camino is looking very good as you can see in the pics.
Congrats to Kevin! I didn't see the pass, but the numbers don't lie,...impressive.
I wish you guys would quit knobdickin' so you could stay for the races on Sat/Sun.
Juhosaphat Aug 3rd, 09, 2:23 AM Mike, I really wish I could stay for a weekend but work rarely allows for it. I'd have to either have it taken off as vacation or open on Friday like I did this time (Since I'm working last Monday to this Tuesday) and have the weekend scheduled off.
I would love to be able to stay for a whole weekend of racing. But working retail is a gynormous party pooper when it comes to racing.
I wish you guys would quit knobdickin' so you could stay for the races on Sat/Sun.
Remember, it's not KNOBDICKIN', if it makes you go faster.:D

kettbo Aug 3rd, 09, 3:05 AM Cobalt and Tracy,
In the second vid, "Mike's First Run," I do see that vaporous trail you spoke of. Glad to have participated in Mike's initial pass down the 1/4 mile!
Cobalt,
Your Chevelle looks awesome! Glad you found a few issues right off the top. After today's 'knob-dickin,' how does it run? I'll probably hang a vid tomorrow if it is worth a damn.
Loader1,
Was a blast on FRI.....you staged next to me and your rev limiter BAP BAP BAP...cool stuff. I saw a few of your runs....you were moving around a lot L-R the first 60' or there about.
Like Chad said, RETAIL SUCKS! I have been working some strange shifts, things now settling down there. I have worked out something, no more single days off. It starts this coming week....SUN-WED, then off THURs, FRI, SAT. Cooler weather coming and there will have to be an overnighter for me this year.....where's the Rip Ass?
I'm knocking out a few "Honey Do's" then the Elky goes up in the air. I can't be a slacker and get left behind....the 31st was a wake-up call.
cobaltchev67 Aug 3rd, 09, 3:07 AM Thanks for the compliments Mike, sorry the car was dirty/dusty on the outside.....it sure got that way fast. Time for another wash.
Congratulations on your success!! At least you took some Canadian money home like you wanted to:thumbsup:. I love your car, seeing it at the track making fast passes with a manual trans inspires me:beers:.
George and Chad, like dueling bajos I swear. Chad would head off, George would run to his car and say "I gotta go humble this kid". Then they'd come back and talk timeslips for 5 minutes:yes: Hahahaha, too funny.
Kevin's car is wicked fast. That A/F meter in the car under the dash....I really want one of those now.

To the first point, Loader, I'm never lining up against you again lol That damn rev limiter is so distracting that even though I'm not well practiced at the tree, it makes it harder for me to concentrate lol
And yes, I definitely need an over nighter as well. I hate when I have to rush to swap tires and get out right as the gate hits me in the ass every time
cobaltchev67 Aug 3rd, 09, 3:14 AM No 'knob-dickin' on the car today, just softball practice and taking a day away from auto related stuff. Haven't started the car up since the changes(left Grandpa's at around 9:30 last night). Shifter linkage work tomorrow, maybe wash the car.
1966malibu Aug 3rd, 09, 3:44 AM George I thought you would like to see this DA calculation for the 31st
Correct your ET and MPH using the DA (Beta Testing)
Density Altitude:
feet above sea level 2005
1/4 mile ET:
seconds 13.121
1/4 mile trap speed:
MPH 101.82
Stock and Mildly Modified Naturally Aspirated Engines
12.818 @ 104.281 MPH
Extensively Modified Naturally Aspirated Engines
12.934 @ 103.414 MPH
This was done with "Drag Times" calculator and Bremerton's weather stats for that day .

PS Just think what it could be if you had a negative DA :D
cobaltchev67 Aug 3rd, 09, 4:00 AM Interesting that the stock and mildly modified N/A engines outperform the extensively modified N/A engines in that DA calculation.

OutCast Aug 3rd, 09, 5:26 AM Remember, it's not KNOBDICKIN', if it makes you go faster.:D
(unless your name is john, or your from Canada, or you have hoser flames on your car, or you use duct tape instead of wire ties) and you run an 11.36..............;)
Guilty on all counts...except for the duct tape...I've upgraded to black zip ties. :D

Kevin R Aug 3rd, 09, 12:05 PM Thanks everyone , It was good to see everyone at the track. Sorry I didnt stick around to long but problems with the car stopped my day short. I ended up going to dinner with my Grand parents, Mom and my Bro and his wife and kids.
Im off work today also so Im going to try to get things straightened out on the chevelle.
gotago Aug 4th, 09, 10:01 AM The banter between George and Chad is nothing but pure entertainment. The Rat and Mouse game was fun to watch. I swear every time Chad headed out to make a pass, George was running for the car. Chad made a hell of an improvement, as evidenced by the sweat on George's brow. George's El Camino is looking very good as you can see in the pics.
George was running:eek: Do any of you have a portable difibulator that you take to the track???
