Is this a local repair shop? Some memory can not be use if its not the right type. How old is this PC? Most computer now a days come with a 1gb of ram other wise vista is slower then dirt. I have seen the wrong size of ram like a 164 bit in a 184 bit hole yes the PC runs but its not running at its peak. A little more information would help like how old the system is and which OS you are running. As far as the 256mb of ram you will be really slow doing anything on the computer. Did you get the ram back that was original installed in the PC both the 256 and the 512? If you only got one back, go and ask for the other one. The last time I have a store do ram work for me they gave me back my original stick and the boxes for the new ram they put in.
The pc is from 2005 It had 2 256 chips to start and I replaced one 256 with a dell512 ,which the local repair shop did not return,I had a previous thread on this PC about 2 weeks ago . I did put the original 256 chip back in the PC with no problem. The PC worked but if you moved it it would turn off,I could not repair myself. The question I have would a bad motherboard cause the memory chips to go bad? Thanks
You got all your original parts back?

Yeah I got all my original parts back right down to a non-working dvd rom. Most of the time when a motherboard goes out there is another issue like the power supply. Last fall i went though this on my personal desktop I ended up replacing the power supply motherboard cpu and ram(had no choice on ram as the new board took a different type). By the sounds of it, it sounds like the repair shop just changed the motherboard out and did not put the ram back in. I also saw the other post you made and they put in a smaller CPU in if I remember right. Do you have a contact of what was supposed to be done to the PC or was it all verbal?

I know if the motherboard calls for a AMD they can not put any other CPU in it. As for a consumer complaint its basically a slap on the hand to the shop. And most shops not all should give the original parts back unless you tell them other wise. You can also report them to the BBB for your state again its just a slap on the hand. Was this shop a big outfit or one of the small ones?
