Rule of thumb is 1/2 coil is equal to about 1" of drop.

I read a magazine last week which showed the mechanic cutting the top coil off with a band saw. Seemed to work nice. Don't use heat, ie. a cutting torch.

The best way to do it is to use drop spindles or lowering springs. I purchased a set of brand new Mcgaughey's 2" drop spindles from a guy on ebay for about $150, or so. I also ordered the front disc brake kit for a total of $650 delivered. By cutting the springs you have less spring travel. Lowering springs don't have as much travel, but also won't let your car bottom out, it's also a slightly stiffer ride. With drop spindles you can use your stock springs.
