: I caved...
RAMBO Jul 30th, 09, 2:22 PM I've been driving the wheels off the cutlass lately. Driving it to work every chance i could & loving it. Wing windows flat out RULE! I Hadn't even put gas in the volvo in almost a month... using this thing for all my errands.
But after getting stuck in traffic on the way home on tuesday and having to peel myself off the vinyl... I just couldn't do it again- I had to drive the volvo today and even had the AC going on the drive in. Man I must be getting old.
Gotta say though.. that olds sure is a blast to drive... Even sitting in traffic with 100degree heat temp guage stayed right at 180deg. hell, for some reason if i'm putt putting around town, with all this heat- the temps yo-yo back and forth between 170 & 190- cooling system doing its job as designed! PRetty cool.
SPARK69 Jul 30th, 09, 2:23 PM rock on!!!
webfoot Jul 30th, 09, 2:35 PM That's what I like to hear! That is one thing I miss about the later years is the missing wing windows.
I've got over 1000 miles on the 70 so far this year. But I drive my pickup around down because it only takes a few seconds to warm up instead of 5-10 minutes.
66 Buick Special Jul 30th, 09, 2:49 PM I saw a write up a month or two ago where they removed the wing windows from a '68-69 Elky and replaced them with one piece glass... I gotta say my personal opinion is that these cars look better with wing windows. Plus I use mine all the time on the Buick.
I was just thinking... in 1966 everyone was driving '66's or older to work... of course they were new then, and the traffic wasn't nearly as heavy. The only reason I haven't driven the Buick this week is... I have an '07 Grand Cherokee with AC.:cool:

I really don't have any problem even driving in the heat- Kinda cool actually getting the "hair dryer" blast of hot air from the open wing windows & all for windows down... Even if i'm just slowly cruising around town... But its the stop & go sitting in heavy traffic when its this hot that i can't do. The car can definitely take it- no overheating at all, but just murder on me.
I drove it in tuesday morning at 5am and it was Soooooo nice out.
Cruised LK wash blvd at lunch... Sooooooooo Sooooo nice  (eric & brett know what i'm talkin about here).. But the ride home, not so fun. Did get a lot of people telling me how cool it looked as we inched along the freeway though, so that was cool :)
Juhosaphat Jul 30th, 09, 3:02 PM I've been driving the Chevelle every chance I get! Even in the heat, the temp gauge stays right around 160-170*. Plus driving along the lake with Seafair going on, I drive right through the Chevy display and everything else. Pretty cool when even though your car is 3 different colors, the guy standing right next to a brand new Camaro or Corvette is giving you a thumbs up
Ben, just take a spatula with you. It'll aid in the peeling off portion of your trip :p Because you know it's worth it :beers:
webfoot Jul 30th, 09, 3:16 PM Hose the seats down with PAM cooking spray before you go next time.
Bryan59EC Jul 30th, 09, 3:21 PM I like the wing windows VERY much.
I dont even open them.
Less wind comes into the cabin when driving at speed.
(I have longer hair and without the vents----my hair gets all messed up driving.)
Gives me a place to rest my hand----elbow on the door frame hand on the vent.
I am a "window down" driver all the time (unless a downpour) so AC is not all that important to me
huffhuff Jul 30th, 09, 3:46 PM my dad would wear the paint off the roof where he rested his hand driving before he had a car with air. 1962 Olds was his first new car with air.

Nah, I think that only happens when you are out driving ;)

gotago Jul 30th, 09, 9:00 PM What, a little heat and y'all wilt like pansies?:D
OutCast Jul 30th, 09, 11:16 PM What have you got for temps, Mark ?
120* in the shade ?
bad.samaritan Jul 31st, 09, 12:29 AM I always loved cars with the wing window...wished my 70 had them. I am digging the new alumitech rad and the spal fans...I just wished they kept the car at a constant temp instead of the yo-yo. Car never crests 190 but I always get paranoid seeing that needle move.
I've driven the Chevelle to Ft. Lewis a couple of times so far...... never a more appreciative crowd than the military of older cars. I got pulled aside at the main gate ID check one time thought something was wrong with my paperwork but the guards just wanted to get some pictures of them with the car..
Stalkingbear Jul 31st, 09, 12:44 AM I took the El Camino out this evening (104*) and it ran at 180 no problem. Windows down - vents open - it was fun.
I used to live in Tucson and the majority of the cars we owned did not have A/C.... windows down, sweat a bit but lovin' it.

That is so cool.
My whale got up to 205* in 100* yesterday with my antiquated cooling system. I honked my aftermarket airhorn at a buddy, then promptly blew the fuse to my fuel pump, and was immediately stranded 5 blocks from home. :(
The slug does not like to start above 200*. :noway:
I walked home, cursed, cussed and generally slammed humanity, got my truck, drove back and jump started it with booster cables and additional creative foul language.
Drove home on a vicious rampage of fuel and gears into my garage. Once home safely, thanked the Big guy, and promised to be grateful in the future. :)
Now it is safely waiting for the plethora of upgrades for my Pinks weekend. :)

Actually, its cooler here than it was in San Antonio, its the altitude. My poor wife is suffering with more than 33 days so far this year over 100 degrees. I think the record is 36 days and the hottest days are usually in AUG. Our AC bills are huge:(
dreis454 Jul 31st, 09, 9:52 AM Mark,Where is HERE? are you allowed to say?

Bryan, I am well, thanks for asking. Will give you a ring when I get back, I would like your opinion on a couple of shops back there.
Hope to see you at the track again, this time I won't throw belts and I will be in the 12s:yes: Hope you are surviving the heat!
