just got the 67 up and running after a 2 year set. rebuilt the entire front end. cut 1 coil off the front springs. everything is good and tight. someone suggested the may be a certain way the spring goes in. i did not see anything other than the pockets it supposed to set in. the noise is when slow moving on uneven ground, turning seems to make it worse. does not do it all the time. Ideas. thanks Dave

When you guys figure it out, let me know. I just did front springs, upper and lower control arm shafts and bushings and shocks on my 1964 El Camino. I still get a periodic clunk on the left side.

Same deal here. It was fine last year. This year it'll pop a couple times in one spot right in front of my garage. No where else, ever.

Our 96 blazer did the same thing, mostly when backing out of the garage, it was caused by the upper ball joints separating inside. It was very hard to locate because it didnt happen all the time.

would a new ball joint be bad? stranger things have happened. i really dont understand all on the left side though (Mine as well). i can bounce this thing up and down several inches by hand and all i hear is the poly bushings squeak. thought it might be a shock bottoming out but it would show up with me bouncing it. im stump guys. Glad I ain't the only one,I guess a new ball joint could be bad, mine doesn't make any noise when I bounce it either!!Just doesn't make sense,EVERYTHING is new by P.O.Maybe he tightened everything up with wheels up in the air and it's binding somewhere?I feel like a Hooker, I've spent more time on my back fiddlin around than I did puttin my motor and trans in graemlins/angry.gif

One source of a popping noise in the front end during braking manuvers is loose caliper bracket bolts. Put a wrench on the nut and if you can turn it with a wrench, it's loose. Those bolts should be torqued to 100 ft lbs.
I had an old 87 Chevy pickup that had a noise over bumps that like to drove me cray, even replaced the lower ball joint. Finally found the problem after 6 months or better of looking for it. I was driving through a bumpy parking lot and this thing is making a racket so I opened the drivers door to see if I could hear better where the noise was coming from. Damn noise went away! Closed the door and it was right back. Stopped the truck and got out to take a look at the upper door hinge from the opening between the open door and the fender and you could see a mark on the upper hinge where the tension spring was dry. Shot some oil on it when I got home and no more noise.

t man are you talking about the bolts that bolt the bracket to the spindel or the caliper to the rotor?

someone suggested the may be a certain way the spring goes in I believe there is one end of the spring that has a coil that is ground flat.

The spring will stand straight up when sitting on this end on the floor, but will tip over if you try to stand it up an the other end.

The lower control arm has the groove in it that accepts the uneven end, so the flat end of the spring goes up into the frame pocket.

I had the same problem when I rebuilt my front end. It was actually sitting higher that it should. I jacked it up and took the wheels off. Look at the spring. It would be easier to see too if you take the shocks off. Make sure the top of the spring is sitting all the way in the pocket. Mine wasn't sitting all the way in and it was making that same noise. I compressed the coil spring down and pryed the spring to sit correctly inside the pocket. Since then, my car sat lower and the noise was gone.

I had a popping noise in the right front for the last Five years. A complete rebuild did not stop it.
I could push the right front up and down by hand and make it pop, but I couldn't figure out where it came from.
I finally just took a wrench to every bolt on the radiator, battery tray, and every one around the fender on the passenger side, it sees to have solved the problem.
