: axle leaking

So I've had some problems with the brakes lately. I replaced the the wheel cylinders, and shoes 2 weeks ago, and lately it felt like I had a rubber band attached to my car. Got back in there tonight and found on the pass. side drum it's the axle seal leaking. Anyone know how much of a PITA this would be to fix? I re-adjusted the drums tonight and the dragging seems to have stopped but I doubt it will be long before those shoes are toast.

drain, remove cover, remove center pin, push axle in remove c-clip, remove axle, take a claw hammer remove the seal, and smack the new one in with the perfect size pipe, takes maybe an hour

just wondering if its a 10 or 12 bolt... maybe a good excuse to get a 12 if its not already!

think I would put new bearings in too if you go to the trouble to replace the seal. if it is a 12 bolt, once you remove the pin - put a zip tie thru the hole it came from. the spider gears have a shim in there too. it is a pain to get it back > in speaking from experience.

Thanks guys...unfortunately it's a 10 bolt. I would love to swap a 12 bolt or a nice aftermarket one in there. I've been looking on CL for one but they're gone usually by the time I call.

I'll just add a bit more detail to this

drain, remove cover, remove center pin (from the carrier, a bolt and the pin itself), push axle in, remove c-clip (inner end of the axle up in the carrier), remove axle, take a claw hammer (or seal puller) remove the seal, and smack the new one in with the perfect size pipe, takes maybe an hour. (Count the number of teeth on the ring gear and the pinion)

The seals are so cheap that they are nearly free. Might as well pull the other side while it is apart, replace that seal too. Inspect the axles for wear at the bearing surface and at the seal area.

so how long can I get away with driving on this? I understand it's no bueno to have gear oil soaking into the shoes but I would like to finish the summer before I go tearing into it again. For you guys who have done this before I'm sure an hour is feasible....I've never done anything with rear-ends before ( I know that last statement is leaving me wide open) so for me it would probably take a while longer. I'd just hate to miss some weekends of good driving weather if I dont have to......also thanks for the help guys

Sounds good I was planning on hitting up either your store or that one on my way to work tomorrow or Friday and pick up those parts. Gotta get a hold of you tomorrow as well. I'll drop you a line late morning and see if your free. Lotsa stuff going on. Someone on post had a major COMSEC CCI no-no yesterday so it's been a little hairy over there.

OK I can head up Sunday. I'll probably leave here around 10 should put me up there around 1130-1200 is that a good time frame?

I bought 2 seals, 2 bearings and a new diff cover gasket. Should I grab some gear oil as well?

Don't kid yourself. :noway:

There will be some psycho mountain man alterior motive.

Last time I was in Alger, my cell phone went straight to the twilight zone.

Although, Dave is an excellent cook. I've had killer tacos and mountain burgers...and am still alive to tell the fable. :D

Thanks again for everything Dave.....car ran great on the way home.....I noticed a lot less vibration at 55mph+ which was going to be another project. I think we killed two birds with one stone.

Brake light came on periodically but brakes were solid the whole way home. Going to look into a shop with vac. bleeders as you mentioned. how did everything pan out with MattieP's car?

Dave

You are welcome, Ray. I did notice some slop, before we pulled it apart.

Matties car was 180 out, but after we fixed that, fired right up, set it too 20* initial, with 16* or so MA.
