: El Camino Supsension Tips Needed.
OahuSSCamino Oct 4th, 03, 11:59 PM What's up guys. I have a 68 ss camino, and need some feedback on installing a anti roll bar in the rear, and also adustable upper control arms for the rear aswell. Need some manufacturer recommendations, and also need to know if anyone has installed these items on thier A-body, and if so how they've helped . Thanks for your time.
Pat Kelley Oct 5th, 03, 1:07 PM You'll like having a rear sway bar. They really help for both cornering and straight line launching. A good move all around. You have a couple options for installing one. Most cars/ECs came with lower control arms that are already drilled for the bar (boxed or not). My 67 EC's were not drilled (originally a 6 cyl car). Next, some CAs are boxed, most are not. If your's are boxed and drill, installing a bar is a piece of cake, just bolt it in. If the CAs are not boxed, you can either box them yourself (installing reinforcment for the holes, to keep from collapsing the CA), or get a bar from Addco that is designed for non-boxed arms (I had one of these on my 66 for many years). If the CAs are not drilled, I recommend getting boxing plates from one of the Chevelle suppliers. These are made with reinforcment in the correct location then drilling the holes. The rear bar must be smaller than the front bar or you will have bad understeer. The best bet is to replace the stock front bar with a 1-1/8" or 1-1/4" bar. There are 1-1/4" front bars for some years of Camaro that fit. Hopefully someone here can point you to the correct years. If you stay with the stock 13/16" or 7/8" front bar, use a 3/4" rear bar. If you increase the front bar size, use a 1" rear bar.
If you have non-boxed lower CAs, I have a Addco 1" bar I'd gladly give you, just pay for shipping. I took it off after 12 years because both control arms broke at the bushings. I don't think the bar had anything to do with the breakage since I installed new bushing without the proper tools graemlins/clonk.gif .
As for adjustable upper arms, I'd only do it if it was necessary to correct a problem. I feel they are not needed 99% of the time. The only thing you'll notice is a lighter wallet.
71350SS Oct 5th, 03, 10:01 PM The stock rear sway bar is still available from GM, may help you save some shipping cost. As for front bars the 1 1/4 and 1 1/8 bars off any 70 to 81 Camaro, Firebird or TransAm work great.
I put a 1 1/4 f-body front bar and a stock rear bar from GMpartsdirect on my El Camino and it handles alot better now.
OahuSSCamino Oct 6th, 03, 1:26 AM Hey, thanks for the tips on using a rear sway bar, never thought about that (duh), however I currently don't use a front sway bar. You think it will be okay with just a rear sway bar only? Hey thanks agin to all who has responded.

71350SS Oct 6th, 03, 1:58 AM No, it won,t. you need the front bar more than the rear bar. Is your car a strip only car?
Pat Kelley Oct 6th, 03, 3:15 AM When I drove my 67 bracket car on the street, the front bar was off and it had a 1" bar on the back. Driving wasn't a problem while going straight but corners were "fun". Freeway interchanges were the most challenging. The car just didn't want to keep turning, requiring a constant increase in steering input. Pretty severe understeer that is dangerious in an emergency. Not something you want for a driver.
jocww Oct 8th, 03, 7:57 PM got stuff for my 65 elcamino from pst havent even looked at it yet tho
MAXX2 Oct 9th, 03, 9:54 AM Go to BMR suspension under the search our website feature on this site. Make sure you search under brakes and suspension and then any date. The link has pics of our BMR Suspension installed in our '69.
Daily/Part Time Driver? Then you need front and rear sway bars. You can wait for the next BMR Group Purchase, or there is a Hotchkis group purchase going on right now. You can find it under the member classifieds.
Team Members, we have heard about the understeer problems with the larger rear sway bars, but what makes that happen?
We're changing to a 1-1/4" or 1-3/8" front bar, and were actually looking to upgrade our rear 1" bar (?).

OahuSSCamino Oct 13th, 03, 5:57 PM Hi, what diameter sway bar should I use, and how does the diameter affect the perfomance of this rear sway bar? Thanks for you time... :D
