I was cruising the 'velle around today and my gen light came on... pulled over and looked at everything, It all looked as usual, shut the hood and drove it home then the light went off what do yall think? time for an alternator?

Jul 27th, 09, 11:07 PM
Not neccessarily. Do you have a way to check your battery voltage right now? I might suspect the regulator first. They can do strange things.

What year? I apologize for not knowing.

mattiepschevelle
Jul 27th, 09, 11:15 PM
70, I didnt even thing about the regulator, yes I have a way to check voltage, the alt and reg. are original to the car. I should just put my internally reg. alt in one of these days

loader1
Jul 27th, 09, 11:20 PM
It may have been an abherration. Reg may have stuck for a sec. Check it with the motor running on the alternator output post. That should eliminate it if the voltage is somewhere around 13.5+.

sweet thanks mike ill check it after dinner

Jul 28th, 09, 1:17 AM
The same thing happened to me with my old ext. regulated alternator. Only the light didn't turn off. It was cheaper to swap to the internally regulated alternator than it was to replace the regulator and alternator. So I just did that lol Much easier to work with

mattiepschevelle
Jul 28th, 09, 1:22 AM
actually, I have a internally reg. alt. laying around I just need to do the conversion, maybe I should look into that

66SSFan
Jul 28th, 09, 1:51 AM
I had the same thing happen lat summer on my '70 and turned out to be a bad alt. If you change to a one wire setup, do a search on this site for the wiring diagram to set it up so the Gen light dose not stay on all the time.

Dave
Jul 28th, 09, 3:07 AM
reach up behind the dash, and cut the wires to the light.

bad.samaritan
Jul 28th, 09, 3:16 AM
do the alt swap for the one you have...or if you think your going to have a lot of power draining goodies later on down the road like elec. fans, stereo, etc go for a CS 130 Alt. I found one for a 92 caddy that had the v-belt pulley & 100 amp output. Pretty much bolted in, then all you have to do is look on here for the diagram that's floating around and it will tell you what wires to splice so that you keep your gen light working and you have the remote voltage drop sensing. If you want to just replace your voltage reg. Your more than welcome to my old one I have a 70 and if I remember correctly we were close in years. Just PM me and let me know if you want it.

well, the light went away for a while, came back, so I put my interally regulated alt in, and did the conversion per instructions on this site, worked for a bit, now light is back on! I think my used replacement alt is messed up?????? I drove it home (edmonds) from work (seatac) the other day with the light on the whole way, my battery still seams to be charging but that light is driving me nuts!

Alternators that have a bad circuit can drain the battery, had that happen before. That would also probably be the reason the light comes on and stays on.

Does the light stay on when the key is off? I had that happen to my old alternator. There was an internal short. I drove it around like that for several days. I just un-plugged the connector from the back of the alternator when I parked it.

It is definitely an internal problem with your alternator. You can check resistances across the terminals and check for stator grounding to the case.

Colo Spgs ? Having a sis and BIL in C Spgs makes that area work for me. Just grab a bigger Holley and jet it small to compensate for the rare air there. Maybe get the VortecPro to host? Everybody bring a set or 781s or 049s, he needs cores.

There isn't a dragstrip in CO springs, already checked:). There is supposed to be a nice one in Sacremento that should be about in the middle somewhere and is supposed to have a "show and go" weekend. There is one about 50 miles outside of Omaha Nebraska (had to check since I was almost sent there:() both are about halfway I think. Either that or I man up like Hoss did and drive for 22 hrs to Bremerton:)

Would certainly be cool to have a big ol' TC convoy heading to a distant track. I'm sure if we planned it far enough in advance, there would be alot of others joining in along the journey.

I was thinking more of in the spring to avoid any serious weather, and give everyone time to complete their winter upgrades.

It would be cool to do a little research to find a track that offers the multiple runs that one can get at Bremerton. A couple days of tnt'ing and bracket racing would be awesome.

Internet problems the last week, so I've not been on as I'm sure you've noticed the lack of snide remarks and somewhat salty questions.

IIRC I have been spending quite a bit of money lately fixing/upgrading my car, and still have to spend about the same amount again to upgrade the rear differential and finish the transmission/OD swap. As far as life outside the Chevelle world, yeah, other things are going on also like never-ending work and helping again with that dump truck/pup trailer stuff(welded up mounts for a spare wheel/tire on the pup trailer's frame Saturday).

Check the fitting from the heater hose to the intake manifold - common place to slowly leak without being very noticeable.
