Walmart had a nice HP laptop on sale this morning for 298 bucks, 3 gb memory, 160 Gig harddrive, CD/DVD burner & Windows Vista...sounded like a super deal for the money.

The sale started at 8am and I bet they were gone pretty quick...but it's possible they still have them.

After buying my 1st laptop i would never go back to a desktop. They have some very nice laptops out there with as much internals as desktops today. Plus i like the conveinence of laying on the couch or sitting at the table or sitting outside. I have had great luck with gateway.

I use an older Dell desktop that still works just fine for me. I dont have a need for a laptop personally.

DO NOT buy a computer from WalMart. I bought a HP desktop from them a few years ago. The computer was messed up from the time I turned it on. I called HP support and the first question they asked was where I bought it. When I told them WalMart they gave me a special HP/WalMart number to call. HP and other companies build a whole line of computers and other items just for WalMart using cheaper components. This special division tech support person kept telling me I needed to download certain things from their website to get it working properly. They had a hard time understanding that the computer wouldn't boot up much let me get online. Once they finally understood the problem I was having they wanted me to ship the computer to them for repairs. I took it back to WalMart and got a refund.

I'd buy a laptop hands down for what you are wanting in a computer. Launch wireless internet and surf the web around your house. Buy a nice monitor if you don't already have one. Laptop = less space. Plus, if you travel for pleasure, it's easy to take the laptop with you. Many hotels have free internet access.

Hmmm, I know quite a few people who have bought computers at Walmart and had no more problems than normal. A good friend bought a laptop there 3 years ago, uses it every day and takes it with him in his motor home, no problems.

Any computer can be a problem, at least tech support was there, and tried to help.....and, I bet you had no problem getting a refund.

Laptop. I like the Sony Vaio that I have. Stay away from major name brands like Dell especially, HP, etc. They build them without enough RAM not to mention they load it up with crap you don't need so it runs slower.

How about a "Desk Top Replacement" They are what look to be a lap top, they are a little heavier, Wide screen format, usually a full size keyboard with seperate 10key keypad, and full voltage motherboard. They do get a lot hotter because of the full voltage. I have a Compaq nx9600. Since Hp and Compaq are now one in the same they both have seperate lines of this computer. My model is now 5 years old and Runs really well. The only problems I've had was the CD/DVD ROM/Burner open button went bad (replaced under warranty, I did the replacement as they allow that) and the screen got broken by one of my students. I ordered one off line and installed it no problem.

There are USB, S-video, VGA, USB-digital drive, 1080i Output, modem and network orts, and some other ports. It has a mini card reader for SD, MMC, SM, XD, and MS/Pro.

It can be plugged into an existing system if you were to just remove the desktop tower, everything can plug into this computer.

I have a desk top replacement (also have 4 desktops) and I love the laptop...

I also have a docking station for it which makes it all more like a desktop when I want it to be...

I have had it to 2 combat zone deployments and the thing runs flawless, still.

I did drop a coke can on it from about 4 feet and broke some keys off the keyboard to which I just replaced the keyboard.

Big harddrives, HD screens, big videocards and lots of slots for Ram...and its all portable...

I wish it didnt cost as much but the $2400 was well spent...

oh yeh it had an external tv tuner so I could play anything with a coax or RCA connection on my laptop screen as well...

Since they are a bit larger I also feel they tend to be a bit better built...

Another vote for a laptop. We keep ours on the side table, wifi connection, always ready to go. The mobility is great. Very convenient for checking directions, movie times, looking up a phone number because it's always were ever we are in the house. Nice also to take it to the patio, pool side, stream music, etc.

The choice all depends on what you are planning to do with the computer.

A laptop would be convenient for me to travel with. A laptop would also be useful at home in conjunction with a full size keyboard and mouse, but it wouldn't suffice for everything.

I couldn't do large compilations nor play top of the line games with all the settings on high without a desktop, unless I paid top dollar for a gaming laptop.

Anyhow, like I said, it all depends on your application.
