OK, who knows the Napa number for the "infamous qiuck ratio box"? I looked online and got a number for the 2 1/2 to 3 turn box for a 68 Chevelle with V-8, that number is meaningless to the guys at the Napa store. They looked it up in thier book and only get 1 listing and it is the 3 1/2 to 4 turn box. So does anybody know the part number I need at the store(not the internet part #)?

Dennis, I don't have the number, but part of the problem might be the application you are telling the counterperson... 1968 Chevelles NEVER came with a quick ratio box (maybe thats why they can't find one). The quick ratio didn't come out until the late 1970's... I think perhaps the 1978 Trans Ams might have had the 12.7:1 box as an option, and while using the newer ragjoint, it still uses the old-style flare-fittings on the hoses... Or have the counterman look for a early to mid-90's Caprice Police car (Option package 9C1)... And then get adapters from Lee manufacturing...

I haven't specifically tried to get a steering box, but usually with rebuilt parts, the applications aren't as specific as quick ratio, etc. Often its just a box that fits, maybe a quick one and maybe a standard one...

I also think the 3:1, 4:1, etc is somewhat misleading, as the internal stops are different with different cars, and therefore might not accurately portray the ratio inside...

No, they actually have a box for the early A bodies with the correct input shaft and line fittings for the that application but it has the 12.7:1 internals. I have the online part number, the guys at the counter can't use that one though. Some of the forum members have bought the box at the store and wanted to know if they had the part # still.

Dennis,

I bought one for my 67. The guy looked it up in his NAPA book by year and car type. The book listed two gears, one at 2.5 turns and one at 4 turns. Try calling a different NAPA to get the number. Sorry that I don't have the number to give you, but the guys at my store had no trouble looking it up.

Same here I bought one for my 67 and all I told the guy was it was a 67 malibu with a V8 and automatic tranny. He told me they had two types on with a 2.5 to 3 turn lock to lock and a 3.75 to 4.25 lock to lock. Naturally I got the quicker one. And to find out the quick ratio was about 10.00 to 20.00 dollars cheaper was a bonus. I would ask again and maybe get a different counter person. Also try to go in at a non peak time when the counter person will have a bit of time to look if it is not easy to find

I don't think Napa carries any steering box with the fast ratio 12.7.1 never came as factory option, now Napa will carry a Monte Carlo or Caprice SS 94-96 (12.7.1) box which will bolt right up to our cars but us different fitting and rag joints but you will not find a steering box from Napa or any part store that comes a stock replacement 12.7.1. for a chevelle.

Of course I could be wrong there is always a possibility that some store has a somekind of alteration or highperformance local shop providing rebuilt parts.

Not to disput your word but I got one from NAPA. I put it side by side with the orginal that came out of the car and I could not tell one bit of diffenence. This is out of a 67 malibu and that is what I told the guy at the counter. It bolted right up to the orginal hole in the frame no problem. And even used the orginal pitman arm as it was still in excelent shape. Just needed a good cleaning and some epoxy paint. The guy at the store looked it up and they had two listed as I had mentioned in the previous post. I had to wait a day to get it from the ware house and I had to return the orginal as a core but that was cool I didn't need it any way if the new one fit.

Just called my local Napa store and they told me that they have two boxes available for 64-69 Chevelles. One box is the standard 3 1/4 - 4 turn box and the other is a quick ratio box that is 2 1/2 - 3 turns. The part number is #51639 and it is remanufactured by ARI with a lifetime warranty for $163.89 plus a $40 core charge. Napa Auto Parts - Buellton, CA

the other is a quick ratio box that is 2 1/2 - 3 turns So, no indication what the ratio actually is?

You could be right as far a quick ration and that would make sense if it bolts up, my 12.7.1 ratio bolts right up but its a 96 caprice box. I highly doubt that the steering box will be a fast ration of 12.7.1 or greater but it is still be a fast ration box. I just heard someone say it was a 12.7.1 ration which was only produced in specific cars typically B body cars. Whatever floats your boat just don't want you to get a box that you think would be 12.7.1 and its not.
