Hi. I have a 71 454 SS 4 speed. My car thinks its a rabbit when you pull a hole-shot. Everything is old and stock in the rear suspension. 12 bolt posi rear with sway bar. HELP! I have read about the SSM or ladder bars, what do you guys recomend. Also, i think the springs and bushings are all origonal. Please advise. Thanks in advance, Chris

Wheel hop is usually caused by a combination of worn bushings, or raised cars by the use of taller than stock springs (so you can fit those huge rear tires). Some folks have solved their wheel hop by simply refurbishing their bushings with new. Others, like me, had all new rear suspension parts, but my tall coil springs made my pinion angle too severe, thus the violent wheel hop. My cure was to install two things: lowering springs and no-hop bars. The no-hop bars provide a different upper control arm mounting point on the rear axle, essentially higher, and more forward than original. This, in turn, shifts the rear axle snout upwards, and lessens the pinion angle. By installing both these parts, my rear angle is almost zero, and wheel hop is a memory. I would not advise the use of "old style" ladder bars like the Lakewood units. Those were a 60's era solution to the problem, but cause other problems like harsh ride and broken shock mounts. SSM bars, available on Jeg's or Summit's websites, mount to your lower axle bracket at a lower point, again in an attempt to shift pinion angle. Either way, there are options to you. Good luck!

I had bad wheel hop in my 66 chevelle when I dropped in my 454. I replaced all the rear end bushings, installed new ssm lower lift bars. I also installed bf goodrich drag radials. Now I hook up and have no wheel hop problems.
