: Best way to convert to discs?

I have an all wheel drum 68 lemans. I would love to add some stopping power to it, but dont have boat loads of cash. Im just wondering what everyone thinks would be the best way to convert.

Option #1. I currently have a 73 camaro setup sitting in my garage. Spindles, rotors, calipers, dust sheilds, and the old stearing parts from the camaro. I could use these but dont want to deal with having to get new a-arms. Would it be a good idea to use these parts and the stock a-arms with one of the offset shafts? The spindles and dust sheilds have been cleaned and painted. The Calipers have been cleaned, painted and rebuilt.

Option #2. Do the 12" conversion using a mix of 89-94 corvette parts and 93-00 camaro parts. I could prob do this conversion for around $400-500 if I bought most of the parts new. Could possibly do it cheaper using ebay.

Option #3. I saw in the lastest car craft that Baer had a kit to fit under stock rims. Figuring this would be a lot cheaper, but when I went to check Baers site it was down.

Option #4. ?????

I know there are a lot of ways to go about it. Whats going to be the cheapest? and easiest? I have not decided if I want to put my rear discs on this car or on my 69 suburban. They are the 79-81 ws6 rear brakes. So would a 4 wheel disc master cylinder work with rear drums?

Someone please point me in the right direction.

If you already have the parts off the 73 Camaro, then I'd try to use as much as you can. About the only thing you can't use without doing the spindle conversion is the spindles themselves. But that's not all bad... your drum spindles are actually exactly the same spindle save for the upper mounting boss being machined slightly different which is easily fixed. Check out Dave's site here: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/David_Pozzi/brakes.htm#disc_brake_spindle to see the difference in the spindles. then, all you need to do is get a set of the disk brake caliper brackets to bolt on your spindles and then re-use all the Camaro parts! Should cost less than $200 for the brackets plus machine work for the spindles! I've seen several posts to sites that have brackets for about $100 per pair.

The rear disks will complicate matters somewhat, but you could probably get away with using the disk/disk master cylinder with the rear drums as long as you have the disk/drum prop valve in the system rather than the disk/disk one. Then things should work good.

Good luck,

Ok so your saying use my stock drum spindles with a modified version of the c4/c5 adapter on daves site and the camaro caliper and rotor?

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm that might just be possiable.

That's pretty much it... just modify the spindles to be like a disk brake spindles, then you can bolt on the caliper brackets. You lost me on the c4/c5 stuff tho... You can certainly make a bracket to use those parts, but it will have to be a custom piece. Or to save money, once you modify the spindles, then use the stock repop caliper brackets that will bolt right on along with the stock calipers and rotors from the 73 Camaro.

Do you know anywhere to get those caliper brackets cheap other then CPU?? Maybe used for like $40 or less?
Thanks

The brackets are pretty hard to find by themselves... you usually have to buy the whole setup. Unless you buy the repops and I think I read that the sponsor (GroundUp) had them for about $100/pair which is the cheapest I've seen them. Most places want about $200 per pair.

If I find them in junk yards, I usually try to get them, but am out right now.

Good luck,

OK I got a pair of the brackets. I machined down the top boss on my drivers side spindle, but it seems like the rotor from the 73 camaro is different then what stock would have been. When you put the rotor on it will hit the top bolt and rub on the bracket in a few places. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the 73 camaro rotors and ones from a 69-72 chevelle? If so what is the difference? I think if I can get a pair of 69-72 rotors then the setup should work fine with my stock spindles, the caliper brackets, and the 73 camaro calipers.

The rotor from the 2nd generation camaro will not work on the A-body spindles, they use differnet bearings. Get a set of rotors for a 69 - 72 a-body, if you shop around the part stories they can be found for approx 60.00 each. The calipers from the camaro should work on the rotors and spindles.
