What are you 700r4 guys getting for driveshaft lengths? I just mocked up my 454 / 700r4 combination in my 69 Chevelle and measured 55 inches from rear axle flange (Strange Engineering 9") to tailshaft. My 700r4 is out of a 1989 Chev 1500 4x2 truck.

I actually have 2 1969 Chevelle's (2HT), one with a Strange Engineering 9" and the other with a factory 10 bolt. I was just curious how this compared... what your u-joint to u-joint length was and if anyone has had any luck 'pick-n-pulling' for the perfect fit.

Since both cars will likely end up with a 700r4 in them I wouldn't mind making one run for both cars... whether its to the machine shop to have one made or the junk yard.

Many Thanks,
David

Your best bet is to call a good driveshaft shop and have one made. They will give you the exact way to measure it.

I thought I scored when I found a driveshaft in our local pick in pull (out of a Astro Van) but after sliding it in I am finding it only slides into the trans about 1.5 inches. With the .5 inch hanging out the tailshaft I've got about 2 inches of spline engagment. I pulled the tail shaft and it appears to be safely in the brass bushing with room to spare. The bad news is that it DOESN'T slide into the 'hat' that looks to help seal the oil into the trans???? Give me your thoughts...

Truck ,bolt on style yoke.
Change it or modify it.
Do a search on the mod or get one from freddie or tom -both onsite users.

Its not that it wouldn't slide in farther into the Trans... its that my driveshaft is to short when it's bolted up to the rear axle! So the question is how short is to short? I hope that makes sense...
