Elcoman Jul 25th, 09, 12:50 AM The IRS sent me a letter requesting that I send in a tax return for 2007. I am a full time student and was not working in 2007. Is this there way of finding more money?
The IRS tried to bill me for transfering my 401k to an IRA a few years ago, that took over 6 months to correct. I wonder how long this will take?
I capitalized IRS in the title, but it reverts back to lowercase.
SixActual Jul 25th, 09, 12:58 AM Wow, the IRS...ya' just can't keep them boys down. :D
If you filed for TY 2006, the IRS wants to see if you earned any wages during TY 2007. If you did, you'll have to file a 1040 or a 1040-EZ. If not, just file a 1040-EZ and place all zeros on the form, and don't forget to place the proper Date (Tax Year) at the top of the form. You'll have to explain briefly why no W-2 is enclosed which is simple enough....you didn't work or earn any wages. Don't sweat it. ;)

I filed in '06 my first full year of school, and my return was for less than 2k. I was just wasting paper.:D
I guess they are looking for all the money they can find, but they are wasting paper and money on me.
Cameano Jul 25th, 09, 3:32 AM I got a $2 refund from them for tax year '86. I sent it in, made 'em pay up. ;)

Chicken Coupe Jul 25th, 09, 9:51 AM Yup looking for anything they can scrape off the remaining "wealth" you amassed while trying to get an "A". l:)
You might consider checking the IRS site for "who has to file" or better yet, calling your local IRS office and reviewing the letter with someone, before just brushing it off.
A friend of mine is an accountant who has had to deal with 9 or 10 year old issues of "genuine errors" regarding what or what is not income for clients.
In some cases you have to file a tax return indicating the "money" you received along with the supplemental form(s) and calculations to "prove out" the amount that is taxable or that it is NOT taxable.
Look at Tim Geitner. He used Turbo Tax to complete his filings and it turned out that he was WRONG. If the Secretary of the Treasury can't figure out what is taxable and what is not....well then who can?
You were a student. Scholarships, grants, reduced fees etc. MAY have some kind of tax implications and the list of similar things that can be taxed is not easy for "common folk" to find, even by reading the millions of posted "articles" and instructions on the IRS website.
There are numerous and extremely severe penalties and fines that can and/or will be imposed. In your case if you file late, penalties and fines, if you send in a return with zero's on it and you received something that could have been taxed, tax evasion (crime), filing a frivolous return ($5000 penalty) and other wonderful repercussions that you would think are only reserved for someone or some entity that is doing it on purpose and has a lot to hide. They thrive on "ignorance is no excuse for the law".
And no I am not a big fan of the current tax system. :D

Dean Jul 25th, 09, 10:19 AM GOOD LUCK dealing with the I.R.S.
You are considered guilty until proven innocent and they will freeze your assets and take money from your bank account if THEY make an error in your IRS account.
Congress is afraid to deal with them for fear of an audit which makes them the highest authority.
If you call them ten times trying to get any error straightened out you will get ten different uncaring people with ten different answers.
They will all agree that you owe fines and penalties for THEIR errors though.
"We, the people" are all considered crooks and they never make a mistake.
Chicken Coupe Jul 25th, 09, 10:50 AM You mean like the guys in the "Matrix" (black suits, sunglasses)? :boxing:
