I have a 70 chevelle, P/S gearbox, quick ratio, that is leaking from the top of the gearbox where the 4 bolts hold the top plate down. This was a rebuilt unit I bought from Napa. Is this typical of a newly built gearbox and that it takes awhile for the gaskets to swell and stop the leak, or is this a no good gearbox? Should I take back and request a new one? I have searched and searched and haven't found anyone else with this problem, everyone else is having the leak at the pitman arm seal. Mine is fine there, it is coming from the top plate.

Any suggestions???

The top plate is probably distorted. I have seen them damaged from a car being in an accident and over stressing the box. I would also return it for another. The top is sealed with a good size square section O-ring, it shouldn't leak.

I had the same problem and mine turned out to be the clamp on the low pressure line wasn't tight enough.
