I removed the backing plates of the front spindles on my 70 with disc brakes. On each spindle there is gasket that goes between spindle and backing plate. What is the purpose of this? Can I get new ones? Do I need them?

It's a rattle minimizing gasket. Blue RTV a bead the same size if your seal is torn up.

Thanks DG, that makes sense now. I figured they were there for a purpose, so I'd better put something there. My originals cleaned up OK. I installed them last night.

I thought it was to prevent dust from getting into the bearings? I need to make my own gasket or add the sealant like you guys did.
