I have a standard power steering pump and would like to install it in my 64 El Camino that I am in the process of converting from a small block to a big block. Must I use the remote reservoir set-up or are there some brackets that will allow me to use the pump I have.

Thanks,
Dale

Dale, I wound up using 66-68 bbc pump and brackets when I did my 65 last winter. I couldn't make the small block pump/res. work short of custom fabbing a cradle for the pump and moving the alternator to the pass side. You'll also have to use a stock 66-68 alterntor bracket so the pump will clear. All of the parts were stock short pump parts for 66-68 big block chevelles. The res. is the remote style, I fabbed my own to save a little money.

Try getting your pump through a parts store like O'Reilly's, you'll save a bundle. The chevelle restoration places seem to get a premium for those!

Here's another thread that may help.

Dale, which water pump will you be using ? I intalled a long style on my 454 and used 70 bbc brackets and pump. Later year bracket sets are still available from GM,alot cheaper than repro 66 and earlier, that also means mounting the alternator on the passenger side.

Any BB Chevy 65-68 used the typeII PS pump. (remote resorvior) I ordered mine from Autozone and paid the core charge. Reasonable price as I remember.

There are two sizes of pumps I dont know how you ask for the correct size. Somehow I ended up with both pumps.

The corvet MC has a different piston stroke and will take a little longer internal rod. I was told this by a rebuiledr because I had the same problem on my 64. They know what length it take to match with your booster.
