: Please Help! Pertronix Ignitor 2 and Flame Thrower 2 Coil
70rag2679 Jul 21st, 09, 4:07 PM Hi Everyone,
I have the stock harness with the resistor wire. Should I remove the resistor? replace it with a 12 or 14 or 16 guage wire? Which wires go to the coil, distributor, starter? Where do the black and red distributor wires hook up to? Can I still hook up my factory tach, what about the little resistor type thing for the radio that hooks up to the coil? I have a stock am/fm 8track.
Also, Can I use my stock spark plug wires?
Is there anything else I'm missing?
Thanks for your help! I'm excited to run this thing...
70rag2679 Jul 22nd, 09, 6:23 AM Wow, no insight on this post? I was pretty sure someone would have some great advice to give.
Anyone out there using the Pertronix Igniter 2 along with the flame thrower 2 coil?
Thanks!

Grumpy Jul 22nd, 09, 6:40 AM I converted my jeep over with the ignitor a while back. Its not very hard and took maybe 20 minutes. I had to remove the resistor in my heep and if it calls for it on the chevelle then I would.
You can use your stock wires but if they are old you may want to change them.

Did you read the instructions that came with it?
70rag2679 Jul 22nd, 09, 9:59 AM Thanks for the instruction sheet!
No I didn't, I haven't received it yet. I was trying to get a heads up on it, like a great chess player, 5 moves ahead. I've heard stories about the resistor wire and removing it to a 12 gauge wire. The instructions aren't clear about that.
Does anyone know if I can still hook up my factory tach to the negative and the radio condensor to the positive to the flame thrower 2 coil?
Rich-L79 Jul 22nd, 09, 10:15 AM The Pertronix coil would hook up exactly the same as the original coil. Tach and condenser connections will remain the same.
Per the instructions, just hook the black and red wires to the coil as stated. If the engine runs fine, you are done. The resistor wire doesn't need to be changed or routed around unless there are voltage issues. If you have a separate ballast resistor, wire it as shown in the instructions.

You've helped out tremedously so far. One more question and I'll leave you alone. haha...You mentioned voltage issues, how can I check for issues, where to check and what should the readings be?
I've heard storys of burning up the resistor wire if you didn't change it out? I guess that's not true?
Also, I just looked at your l79, what a beautiful car. Very nice work.
Thanks again for your help!

I have the Ignitor I in the L79 car and it still has a resistor wire. Been in there for nearly a decade without any problems.
Read the troubleshooting section in the instructions. If the car runs rough or won't start, you need to check the voltage at the coil. It should be getting 12v or better with the ignition on. If it's getting less than 12 volts you may need to disconnect the resistor wire and run a new wire from a switched source (power to the wire turns on and off with the ignition switch). I don't think you'll have any problems, just hook up the red and black wires and fire it up. Make sure to check the timing when you are done and adjust as needed. It really shouldn't have changed unless you've removed the distributor to do the Ignitor II install, but it's still good to check it.
70rag2679 Jul 22nd, 09, 12:13 PM That just sums it up...Thanks Rich, I appreciate the help!
Rich-L79 Jul 22nd, 09, 12:17 PM I should also add that I installed an Ignitor II billet distributor in the 427 in the wagon project. It was a simply 2-wire hook up retaining the factory harness with no modifications. Fired up without any igintion problems whatsoever.
