I have a black 67 SS and I want to put original style steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps back on it. My question is should the wheels be painted gloss black to match the car or a semi-gloss black? Also, should the back of the wheel be the same color? Thanks.

I asked the very same question a few weeks ago about the wheels on my Black 67 and this is what I was told:
They need to be painted professionally with gun... not spray can... they are primered first front and back and then sprayed Body color.. back side will just get overspray on the primer... that's it.
Hope that helps! ;)

I think all GM steel wheels were dipped primed with a black primer, then painted.

OK dipped in black primer. Then if you got full wheel covers (3 different options for full covers) the outside was sprayed what gloss black? Or was the same as the black as the body color black.

Wheels were painted lower body color when standard hub caps (i.e., no optional hub cap) were supplied. When full hub caps were ordered the wheels were black.

Thanks guys for all of the good information. The wheels are going to the paint shop this week. Jacquie, your car looks extremely nice with a great color combo!!!

So, would Kelsey Hayes have dipped the rims in primer. Then sent them to the GM plant. Then GM applied the finish paint. Black for all full covers and body color for all others?
I still have two 6 A3 rims that have original colors. One is black and one is white. The black rim still has a lot of black on the inside of the center section and also in the inside of the tire side. I would think these would be dipped in black; but would it only be black primer as stated previously?
