I have a 67 malibu with a 283 and 2sp powerglide. It HAD factory air. There is no interior AC controller, just some modded fan switch that is rigged up under the dash. There is no compressor, nor is there a bracket for one. The alternator is on driver's side. All of the firewall is intact, but rough. I removed the passenger fender and removed all the heat and air components from the firewall and under the dash.

Where the heater core is, its pretty rusty. I will need to replace some of the metal as it goes down to the toeboard. A couple of the screws beneath the hoses on the firewall just disentegrated when I put a little torque on them, lol. Also, I have a little bit of rust inside where the AC fit into the cowl. There was some type of bracket that screwed into the side panel and held the plastic case there that was just disintegrated.

After looking at all this, I'm thinking I should just get an aftermarket air setup, although the actual plastic pieces to my original are in excellent shape. If I go aftermarket air, what about the large hole that the original AC went into? Do I need to get a factory AC controller somewhere or do they come with something new? I'll start doing some of the sheetmetal in a few weeks, so any advice on that is appreciated.

Aftermarket air companies have a plate that goes over the opening to make it look right. Check with the different A/C companies to see what type of controls they offer. Some use the factory controls.

my 67ss came with factory a/c but was missing several pieces too. I was fortunate and found a 66 bu with the whole system complete so I robbed all of the parts for a fair price. It looks all factory now (several years later) which is what my goal was originally. It does not blow as cold of air as I would like though and never really has with the R-134. Was pretty neat to see/learn how simple the a/c system operated back then after getting over the "o my goodness" shock of it all... In hindsight I probably would have went the aftermarket route...some very nice systems on the market and they appear cheaper now than they were 15 years ago...

Thanks Guys. Less holes in the firewall the better. I'm worried about the controls though, its going to be tough or expensive to find a functioning control unit with air. This is going to be a daily driver, so if it's custom, as long as it looks good and works better, I'm not overly concerned with it.
