Changed ISP from ATT DSL to ATT uverse yesterday. Since the conversion the computer (hp Pavilion) won't stay on standby. It will go into standby but within seconds starts back up, every time. No settings were changed and the ATT installation tech says nothing he did should've caused it. ATT tech support says it's a Microsoft problem (XP OS) but MS wants $59 to answer a question about XP. HP won't respond either because the computer is out of warranty. Any ideas? Before this it was touchy and the slightest bump would start it up from standby but now it happens without any apparent cause.

I doubt the switch to uverse is the cause as I've done the same switch -Att DSL to ATT Uverse.
BTW ,your ISP is still ATT.
You might check for loose connections at the internal components.

Shut down and unplug, then open up the case and clean out all the crap that accumulates in the fans and grilles.
Especially the power supply!
Pull the fan off the CPU and deep clean the fins, clean the fan blades.
You may want to get some heat sink paste and have it on hand as well.
If so, pull the heat sink off the CPU and clean the surfaces, slather on some new paste and reinstall, making sure everything seats as well as it used to.
That ought to get it back to normal...

If you can get to teh BIOS in the thing, look for a setting called "Wake on LAN" Set this to off.

If you can't find the setting, you should be able to find your network card in the Device Manager (in the control panel under ) and check the Power Management settings for "Allow this device to wake the computer" Uncheck the box or whatever so that it won't wake the computer.

edit: After thinking about it, try the Device Manager one first. It's easier, and you won't have to mess with the BIOS.

Tried the device manager one but didn't help. Trying now to make sure all the ATT updates are installed but can't find the latest updates. taking the computer apart will be a last resort thing.

What updates are you referring to ?
They installed no additional 'crap' on my 'puter when I switched and the tech even agreed that it needed nothing else -ASI told me the same thing 8 years ago at the initial DSL install.
The ATT Gateway does it's updates automatically so not sure what your doing.

I sure as heck don't know what I'm doing either since computers aren't my strong suite. The update I'm referring to has been a pop-up from ATT for the last few weeks but I always clicked on "update later", putting it off. It probably won't fix the problem anyway. I figured out how to put it on "hibernate" so that's what we're doing for now. It's strange, started doing it (not staying on standby) just as soon as it was converted to uverse from dsl.

What is it that you think was converted ?
There was nothing changed in/on my 'puter to go from ATT/DSL to ATT/Uverse.
The account was changed from the dsl to the uverse but that was a change made from here to ATT -nothing in the 'puter.
Only info I've received from ATT is for the e-mail settings.

Thanks to all that responded and especially to Keith (Chevello) for the very detailed instructions (via PM) on how to get to the correct box to uncheck. Now we have standby again.
