: Edelbrock anti-hop v. SSM lift bars

I have been trying to decide how to get rid of the fairly violent wheel hop I have in my '70 454 4 speed car and recently have ordered all new PST bushing both front and rear, new springs, and Edelbrock anti-hop bars. I will also be installing new shocks (probably the new AIS muscle car ones from Edelbrock). I had tried to find the SSM lift bars I had read about but couldn't find them anywhere. I see in another post that they changed their name and are apparently still around. My questions are...Between the Edelbrock anti-hops and the SSM lift bars which are better at reducing wheel hop? Which are easier to install? and Which are less noticeable to the casual observer? Thanks! I will send the Edelbrocks back if they are not a good choice. Skip

i cant really comment on the wheelhop issue because i never had this problem on my 66. but my car also has the factory control arm braces. if your car does not have these braces i would definitely get them whether they be the factory type or aftermarket.

i like the fact that the ssm bars are boxed. had i bought the lakewood/edelbrock no hops i would have either have had to box my lowers, or buy boxed lower c-arms. it was just cheaper and easier for me to buy the ssm lift bars.

the ssm bars do show a little bit, to the untrained eye they wouldnt be noticed. with the edelbrock no hops you would have to crawl under the car to see them.

I got rid of my dash shaking wheel hop using hotchkis rear contol arms and lowering springs graemlins/thumbsup.gif what a relief, check protouring.com for the SSM bars. good luck!

My car came with boxed lowers so that is not needed. I may be able to eliminate the hop just with the bushing kit and new shocks (dumping the air shocks) but I do want to go ahead and take the extra step with the Edelbrocks or SSSs. Anybody else like their set up?

I installed SSM bars on my 4 speed/4.10 geared 70 SS396 that had violent wheel hop..SSM's cured it graemlins/thumbsup.gif and the car hooked better too..I just had the stock F41 rear suspension before the SSM's,and nothing was worn out..stock ride height too.

I'm running the Edelbrock no-hops on my car and they worked great. The old local track had bad traction problem and with the no hops car hook great. I can't speack for the SSM bars, but it sounds as if they are a pain to get now where as the Edelbrock are a phone call away.

Glad to hear at least one happy Edelbrock No Hop bar fan. Thanks for the input Q-ship. They seem easier to install and more stealthy. But obviously that doesn't matter if they don't work. Any other happy Ebrock users out there?

I have been thinking about getting the Edelbrook no hop bars for my '64 Malibu, will they hit the floor on a '64 with a 12 bolt rear end? Some people say they have had clearance problems with this style of no hops. Dave

SSM's install like any other control arm,and the stock sway barbolts right up too. They are pretty stealthy looking IMHO and experience, and really are not noticeable. And,IMHO I don't think the Edlebrocks are easier to install..

I have the Mr. Gasket No-Hop bars and they worked for me. The wheel hop dissapeared and it hooks much better. I have Boxed lower control arms with new rubber bushings.

I tried both on my 67 Elky. I had very bad wheel hop so I installed the Eldelbrock no-hops. They reduced the wheel hop but didn't stop it. I removed them and installed SSM lift bars. The wheel hop vanished and has never returned.

Having installed both, I found the SSM bars to be much easier to install. They bolt right in, the only catch is you have to drill one hole on each side. When this hole is located it sets the pinion angle. So you'll need to check this (instructions are included). The no-hops were much more difficult to install. You have to drill through the webbing of the pumpkin and remove the upper bushings (a job in itself). I had to do quite a bit of grinding on the bars to get them in the proper location. Another downside is, they block access to the filler plug so the right side bar has to come off if you want to check the grease level. Probably not an issue for you, but they caused the upper control arm to dent the bed of my El Camino. I didn't like that either. My vote is for SSM Lift Bars.

I had a small block/turbo 400 '71 Chevelle that had terrible wheel hop back in my high school days (early 80's). I bought a pair of Mr Gasket No Hop bars and the problem was solved. The car still spun like crazy but no more dash jaring, head shaking wheel hop! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Edelbrock no-hops worked on my '72 Chevelle SS. Rear control arms are Hotchkis pieces, with poly bushings. Wheel hop is a thing of the past!

I think that both the No-Hop bars and the SSM Liftbars work as advertised. I'm using Lakewood No-Hops, they work well. But I'll agree with Pat that they weren't the easiest thing to install. I had a bitch of time getting the bushings out of the rear, I was worried about braking off one of the ears. Drilling the holes through the webbing was pretty easy, actually--you use the hole in the no-hop bar as a drill guide.

But I wouldn't hesitate to use either the No-Hops or the SSM arms.
