: 64 malibu, is it worth it
sir regginald Jul 15th, 09, 12:34 AM I saw this car on craigslist about 2 weeks ago, I checked it out. It is now on ebay and the owner says its clean inside and out.

The car has been painted several times, different color each time without the prior being removed. Rust weeping from arounf the rear window and windsheild. at least bodywork on the passenger rear quarter pannel, bubbleing, rust and minor collision damage behind the rear bumper. Headlliner, some soft trim missing on interior. Rear breaklights not working correctly, horn not connected, blinker not functioning correctly. New front bumper, parking lights are not even wired. Claims engine is a 327, but driver side alternator and water pump look more like 307 or 350. Passenger side door hangs up. Engine and Tranny are both leaking, exhaust probably needs to be replaced.
what do you think about $7500? is it worth it? I was thinking more like 4k-5k

I'm thinking $4-$5,000 too. The alternator is on the passenger side though..

That is what I meant to say, typically 327 had the alternator on the drivers side. Im sorry
johndoby Jul 15th, 09, 12:49 AM Hard to say. I paid $10,500 for a similar 66 Malibu.

It has very little rust, but does have body filler at the top of the rear passenger pillar. Also, the paint on mine is decent, but needs to be glazed, blocked down and repainted. $7500 is a decent deal if it's what you want, and depending on the mechanical integrity. With 31 bids already, it seems as though it is generating a good bit of interest. Follow the auction and if you feel as though it's the right car for you, go for it. I wouldn't be pressed to use the Buy It Now option, as I wouldn't think the auction would exceed that. I've been wrong before though!
Good luck!

I think you did good for what you got. Your car looks alot more solid than this car. Not to mention your interior looks great, all this one has is seats, and carpet. To get this car to the quality of yours I would say, 1k for rewire, 1k for exhaust, 1k for interior, 1k for misc. trim. I don't know, I really like the car, but seeing it in real life puts me at an advantage than the others that are bidding on it. pictures, especially bad pictures can be deciving! I was going to spend about $4-5K on the car and restore, the owner is selling it under the assumption all it needs is trim work. Oh well, whoever gets it will be really happy or really upset.
64SS427 Jul 15th, 09, 1:04 AM generic pictures, vague description, seller claims no knowledge of car,
sounds like you've checked it over pretty good. It will sell for what somebody is willing to pay. I wouldn't pay 7500 for that car, but I'm not in the market either. How much was the seller asking on craigslist?

Craigslist said 9K, they told me they would take 7K, I offered 5K, they said their dad bought it for 7K so they didn't want to take a loss, oh well

craigslist listed 9K, they told me they would Take 7k, I offered 5K, they said their dad bought it a year ago from NM for 7K and didn't want to take a loss.
twotone64 Jul 15th, 09, 11:49 AM The alternator and water pump could have been changed, those really dont have any bearing on what engine you have, only what heads you have. I changed mine only 6 months after getting it. I changed to long water pump on the 327 because the drivers side alt bracketry kept breaking under WOT on the track. Even when I went to the 350 I kept it there.
64SS-283 Jul 15th, 09, 8:41 PM I would say 4k max. If it was a SS maybe more. Your going to have to spend a few k to get it done and there is that hidden stuff. Just my 2 cents
Dave
64SS427 Jul 15th, 09, 9:10 PM Walk away. Leave them with your phone number and standing offer, whatever you feel is reasonable. When it doesn't sell in a few weeks, they may decide you had a reasonable offer after all. If they don't, oh well. It wasn't meant to be. There are other cars out there.

johndoby Jul 15th, 09, 9:15 PM You sound as though you have already made your decision. I would say that if you are on the fence anyway, do as the above poster said and walk away. You'll pat yourself on the back when you do find the car you're looking for.

I think what has chapped my hide is the fact that i have seen this car, i know the good and the bad. They are making the car out to be only lacking trim. I have even contatcted them through ebay and asked them questions and they lied. The people that are bidding on this car, unless they have seen it in person are bidding on a car they presume is near very good condition. oh well, like I said the purchaser will be very happy or really pissed.....I'm gonna let this one go. Thanks for all your comments
