: Lifting rear with coils, which ones??
notstock71 Jan 7th, 05, 3:44 PM Anyone have experience or opinions on which springs to use to lift the rear of a 67? The old springs had a bunch of spacers in them and the car also had air shocks. I do not want to use the air shocks.
I am trying to get the rear to sit where the quarter panel lip is even with the top of the tire. The tires are BFG Radial T/A's 275-60-15's. The diameter of the tire is 28". I do not think the heavy duty springs gives enough lift to sit like I want.
The other problem in deciding what to use is having a good baseline to determine how much higher I need. The old springs are obviously shot so I can't just say I need x amount more height than a stock spring.
Anyone have opinions or pictures that will help?
sinned Jan 7th, 05, 4:34 PM Are we doing this unsafe and hideous act to clear tires???? Or do we actually like the stinkbug look. "A" bodies already have terrible roll characteristics, most guys try to correct it. Jacking up the back that high could actually creat an unsafe condition.
notstock71 Jan 7th, 05, 4:54 PM The plan is to get the whole car to sit up. There will be BB springs in the front. The overall look is a 60's style hot rod. It will sit level when done (hopefully). I am going to be working on the rear suspension soon which is why the post only asked about the rears. Here's the look.

sinned Jan 7th, 05, 5:41 PM Against my better judgement, try some cargo coils for a wagon or Elco. The local part store should have them for about 70.00/pair.
Derek69SS Jan 7th, 05, 6:19 PM That would look nice dropped 3-4" ;)
Axle-hop will be an issue at that height.
Blue 69 Jan 10th, 05, 7:43 PM Eaton Detroit spring makes overstock springs. The tallest ones they make are 2" over. This may not seem like much but it is huge in fact they are difficult to get into the front. I used a set on a 67 442 to acheive just the look you are shooting for.The car is still very stable no problems with alignment either.Stay away from spacers and air shocks.
Nice looking car BTW
John
notstock71 Jan 10th, 05, 10:36 PM I am having a set custom made by The Suspension Shop in Kansas. I saw their ad in Hemmings. We are still trying to determine how much over stock is needed. They are $128 a set. I know this is alot more than over the counter springs. They will exchange for another custom set if I'm not happy. I just tell them it needs to go up or down so much and they'll make them. I figure it is money well spent since I will be exactly where I want it to be.
six8malli Jan 12th, 05, 8:54 PM Cargo Coils! :D
rianbechtold Jan 15th, 05, 2:39 AM OH OH!!!! I can actually HELP someone for once!!! LOL, i bought mine from jc whitney and they are awesome! They are a 3 inch lift (after driving, they break down and sit real nice) the one thing that is hard to get used to is the hard ride, mine was hard at first but now (about 200 miles or less later) its a smooth as anything else!! I haven't noticed too many handling probs but if you want it to be COMPLETELY unnoticeable just get a rear sway bar. The look is DEFINITELY awesome!!! Also, make sure under your car looks impecable because people behind you can see it! LOL, i'd post a pic if i knew how!
mr 4 speed Jan 15th, 05, 6:41 AM I have a set of the springs rianbechtold mentioned sitting around in my basement.
The Moog cargo coils work well too, really doesn't look much taller than stock, and I have those on my 70 SS454..with the same size tire all the way around,it looks just right IMHO
notstock71 Jan 15th, 05, 10:56 AM The new ones are going to be 2.5" over stock height with the stock spring rate. It's a baseline to start with. Hopefully they will be here by next weekend so I can install them.
I have a feeling they aren't going to be right but only time will tell.
Tony66 Jan 16th, 05, 5:40 PM I've put new stock BB springs inthe front of my 66 from TRW about 5 yrs ago and I wanted the rear a little higher than the front so I replaced the worn rear springs with new stock springs for the 66 chevelle wagon in the rear from trw.My car sits the way yours looks in the picture which I think is just right IMO.And I have 275-60 rear and 235-60 front. These springs were about 50.00 a pair from summit.Your cars stance looks just right in the picture IMO. But you know what they say about opinions. Nice looking car you have.Tony
baddbob71 Jan 17th, 05, 1:27 AM That is the true Muscle car stance IMO, these aren't Ferraris
