: It musta been the NAWS.........
Dave Jul 14th, 09, 1:41 AM cause the 400 is toast.
I got the car up on stands, and got the cover off, and I don't think the pan should be full of sparkly mud, and chunks.:noway:
Unfortunately, I handed the pan out to Tory, and by the time I finally crawled out, He'd cleaned it out? He don't clean nothing, but he cleaned that?
I'm gonna pull it tomorrow, try to get it down to Jim, see what it's gonna take to put it back together.:(
Juhosaphat Jul 14th, 09, 1:43 AM Bummer! My pan had a bunch of crap in it when I swapped the gaskets but I just cleaned it back out, threw the new gasket in and filter and she's been driving ever since
Dave Jul 14th, 09, 1:48 AM It don't bother me too much, as the trans is the only part of the car that hasn't been rebuilt. It's just as it came out of the Silverado, I got the 454 from, cept a shift kit.
65lkey Jul 14th, 09, 1:49 AM time for a transbrake
Dave Jul 14th, 09, 1:51 AM time for a transbrake
I will.....eventually. But I'll be lucky to afford getting it together as it is right now.

Brettd85 Jul 14th, 09, 10:52 AM What is this pan you speak of????????
Bed pan. :D
Dave, its time it got rebuilt anyway. Why dont you just do it yourself? You said you want to get into rebuilding transmissions.
kettbo Jul 14th, 09, 1:58 PM Dave, its time it got rebuilt anyway. Why dont you just do it yourself? You said you want to get into rebuilding transmissions.
I hear Chad is pretty good rebuilding transmissions;)
Just don't let him install one fer ya:D
gotago Jul 14th, 09, 3:17 PM Ah, you needed an excuse to pull the motor anyway, may as well pull it with the tranny attached. TKOs don't have issues like you described.........I'm just sayin'

Well, if I drove mine like you do, it'd still be ok, now wouldn't it?;)

I have a plentiful supply of lock washers on hand now :D

gotago Jul 15th, 09, 9:24 AM Well, if I drove mine like you do, it'd still be ok, now wouldn't it?;)
You mean with the motor IN it??
Dave Jul 15th, 09, 11:32 AM Ya, I guess I should specify that. I guess I can picture you sitting in your car, without a motor, making engine sounds, slobbering yourself, dreaming your car is as fast as mine.
gotago Jul 15th, 09, 8:20 PM Ya, I guess I should specify that. I guess I can picture you sitting in your car, without a motor, making engine sounds, slobbering yourself, dreaming your car is as fast as mine.
You been peeking again?:D
Dave Jul 15th, 09, 8:56 PM I've got NOTHING to say.;)
Dave Jul 16th, 09, 9:55 PM OK, it's at Jim's. wasn't too bad, but it's been slipping for some time, as the clutches are worn, forward clutches were toast. Hard parts look good, just needs the 34 element upgrade. :D
I just need more money now.

I finally got the trans out of the motorhome today, been working on it for days. It's never been out so I was blazing rivets out of the crossmenber where bolts will be. Every bolt on the exhaust had to be cut because of a little safety spot weld at each location so the retaining nuts wouldn't come off. Then the stupid converter bolts didn't want to come loose.
But at least it's out and on the floor now.
Just didn't have time to remove the e-brake assembly on the back of the trans so hopefully I can get Roger to do that and drop it off at Jim's for me. I talked to him and he can have it ready for before I get back.
OutCast Jul 17th, 09, 12:22 AM Have a fun and safe trip to the Deutchland Darryl.
Dave Jul 17th, 09, 12:32 AM Let me know, I can do it. I got a couple trips south to make in the near future.
Shoulda seen the 5000.00 dragster trans, he had sitting on the table.
Dave Jul 19th, 09, 11:37 PM Now I'm ready.

OutCast Jul 19th, 09, 11:43 PM Now that's reaaaaal purrrr-ty.
kettbo Jul 19th, 09, 11:56 PM Looks nice DAVE.
What didya get for your money? Didya go reverse pattern, etc?
Dave Jul 20th, 09, 12:51 AM Stuff, things.
65lkey Jul 20th, 09, 1:02 AM My guess is a heavy duty rebuild with a serious shift kit, 34 element sprag. No transbrake cause there still a modulator, and most reverse valvebodys are manual's which means they plug the modulator
Dave Jul 20th, 09, 1:14 AM Ding, Ding,Ding..........for the most part.
Mr. Monza Jul 20th, 09, 1:20 AM Whatever you got for whatever you payed, you will be pleased!!! keep the secret. Jim built my P/G and it's one tough MF. He is also known in the NPSA crowd for his work.
Dave Jul 20th, 09, 2:10 AM I just told Jim what I do with it, he asked what my budget was, then did what he could, within that budget. He even did me right on a few parts.
It is just a heavy duty stock type rebuild. 34 sprag, high quality clutches, steels, that kinda stuff, and some other mods, that even he didn't really tell me about.;)
There was a VERY high dollar two speed aluminum something sitting there, all I know is that one gearset alone was 1500 from Coan. I think it was outta a 7 second something dragster.
And a pretty picture of a Monza on the wall.............:D
I will highly recommend Jim, and I haven't even got the trans in the car yet.
65lkey Jul 20th, 09, 11:06 AM 400's are stout transmission from the factory. When you upgrade to a 34 element sprag, and throw a nice shift in there you have a transmission you'll have a hard time breaking

Wow I was just reading along and BAM right in my face:sad:
I really dont think it was the trans that broke but we will never know.:D
I do know that the trans is a very nice peice now:thumbsup:
Dave Jul 21st, 09, 1:46 AM Well, it runs, i took it around the block. I had to baby it, cause I remembered that the little floor jack was in the trunk, and I didn't wanna bash the 1/4 panels.
Seemed alittle off, but when I got home, I rechecked the fluid, and it was empty. Little Biotch drank a whole case, and wants some more.
I'll pick up another case tomorrow on the way home from work.
OutCast Jul 21st, 09, 2:06 AM Where's the outlaw 1/4 mile in Alger ?
I forsee a late nite rendezvous between a '68 and a '71 on my run back north to the border after Pinks.

Dave Jul 21st, 09, 9:30 PM Oh Yeah, that's much better. I'm not sure what all he did, but he did it.
I thought the trans was pretty good before, but I must not have known what a real trans felt like.
FourEightyNine Jul 21st, 09, 11:04 PM I thought the trans was pretty good before, but I must not have known what a real trans felt like.
