i just did a major rebuild to the suspension of my 72 el camino and it is all over the road, can't go over 35 mpg or i can't keep it in my lane ! i replaced everything, control bushings front and rear, new coils front and rear, new kyb g2 shocks, ball joints, tie rods, adjusters, idler arm, center link,a rebuilt steering box and pump.and took it to firestone and they aligned it all up.and put 4 new radial tires and 4 new rally wheels ! i can move the steering wheel back and forth about 2 to 3 inches in either dierection be fore the car responds. i tried to adjust the worm gear out or in several times and it makes no differance.sometimes i have to jerk the wheel a little to steer it,like it is sticking or hanging up on something,is it possible to have gotten a bad rebuilt steering box ? i'm scratching my head on this one !

Sounds like you need to put someone inside the car and work the steering wheel back and forth and you get under the hood and see if its in the steering box or the tie rods. Also if you have to jerk the wheel you probably have the adjustment to tight.

If everything is nice and tight, and there's no slop anywhere, I'd have the alignment checked again by someone else.

We have a lot of "Bubbas tanning and alignment" shops around here, and I know from experience that some are just totally clueless, especially when it comes to old cars like that.

everything is new and tight. i can wiggle the shaft on the steering box back and forth about a quarter of a turn before the pitman arm moves. and the adjuster will only move about a half turn in either dierection and makes no differance. i'm thinking whoever rebuilt the box got somthing too tight in there or something.i'm taking it back to star auto parts and see if they will exchange the box.

A 1/4 turn at the box, thats the problem...You got a bad one. Checker or Kragen who ever you have in So. Ca. has quick steers for Chevelles. On line its....... WWW.Partsamerica.com (http://WWW.Partsamerica.com)

You also paid for an alignment that was a waste of time to do with a worn out steering box.

i took the box back, and made them refund my money, they wanted to give me another box but i say what's the point ? it would be another 35 year old box rebuilt useing used parts and a seal kit.and the chances of it being a bit sloppy would be up there.so i ordered a new agr box from summit racing,it was a hundred bucks more but worth it not having the aggravation. i oppted for the lifetime alignment from firestone,so they can realign it again at no more cost to me.
