I put 17"x10" rally wheels on the rear of my '66 Chevelle with 5.5" b/s, and 17"x8" on the front with 4.5" b/s. I also lowered the back and front 3". The front tires hit some bolt when I turn the car and the back tires are too close to the fender (closer on the right). It looks great, but we have to raise it an inch in the front and back. I am also going to have to get 1/2 inch or 3/4 or an inch more backspacing for the rear wheels. My question is: how far should the rear tires be from the fenders for turning purposes? We already rolled up the lip of the fender on the right side, and I want the tires as far out in the back as possible.
Thanks,
Bob

The rear tires are closer to the inner or outer fenders? How close? Measurement?
If one side is closer, that tells you your body isn't centered on the frame.
On the front, what bolts are you referring to? Inner fender bolts? If so,you can just remove the top two or three fasteners or replace the hex heads with buttonhead bolts for more clearance.

The rear tires are close to the outer fenders. There seems to be plenty of room on the inside. The clearance on the right is about 1/4 inch and the left is about 1/2 inch. My lowering guy thinks there would still be turning problems even with button type bolts in the front. I could get more backspacing in the front, but then there would be too much room between the outer fenders and the tires for me.

I think your "lowering guy" is being too cautious,IMO. My 69 has 17x9 front wheels with 5" backspace and 275/40/17 tires. The tires are really close to my inner fenders but don't rub, even during serious turning maneuvers, and I doubt your 66 is as low as my 69.
A 17x8 wheel with 4.5" backspacing should be a no-brainer on that car.
