Just a heads up for you guys contemplating swapping a motor. on a 70-72 you can pull the motor with the hood raised and the radiator left in the car. Just make sure you bolt your lift chain as close to the intake as you can. Then when you go to install a big block. just put the hood a bit to the front so the motor has a slight tilt to the back and is slips right over the core support. As you lower the motor, the top of the hoist clears the hood. I did take the crank pulley off the 454 though.
Yes its easier and a lot less risky pulling the hood, but I didnt have extra help this afternoon and I wanted the hood on because its been raining on and off. Plus the tranny cooler lines were hooked up and I didnt want to make a bigger mess. jim

get rid of the chains and use a carb lift plate- it makes things so much easier and gives you the most room possible if you leave the hood on the car.
but i think i'd always take the radiator out, you know, just because.

I never had to remove the hood on both my '70 or the '67. Both have BB with kickout oil pans too.
